{"id":120551,"date":"2019-05-03T11:30:10","date_gmt":"2019-05-03T15:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=120551"},"modified":"2019-05-03T12:08:22","modified_gmt":"2019-05-03T16:08:22","slug":"from-the-archives-tree-conk-peace-pipe-and-football-paperweight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2019\/05\/03\/from-the-archives-tree-conk-peace-pipe-and-football-paperweight\/","title":{"rendered":"From the Archives: Tree conk, peace pipe, and football paperweight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here are a few items from the Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library.<\/p>\n<h5><em>Life<\/em>\u00a0on the Trail<\/h5>\n<p>When <a href=\"http:\/\/appalachiantrailhistory.org\/items\/show\/434\"><em>Life<\/em>\u00a0magazine took to the Appalachian Trail<\/a> in 1941, famed documentary photographer Eliot Elisofon, assisted by Joe Reshower de Casseres, further documented the experience by adding their names and a few doodles to this tree conk.<\/p>\n<p>One of Elisofon\u2019s photos in the Oct. 13, 1941, issue of <em>Life<\/em>\u00a0shows Bates Outing Club members descending Saddleback Mountain. The first was in April for traditional four-year grads, and the second was in June or even July for graduates of the college&#8217;s new three-year option. The three-year plan also lives on, but as a rarely chosen option.<\/p>\n<p>When new President Hedley Reynolds returned to a single-Commencement format in 1971,\u00a0 Lewiston <em>Sun Journal<\/em>\u00a0hailed the change in its lead editorial, calling the change &#8220;preferable to the confusing, double Commencements.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #424242; font-family: 'Neue Frutiger W01'; font-size: 1.25em; font-weight: 600;\">Banding Together<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This cornet belonged to Levi W. (With Garcelon Field not yet completed, the 1898 game was played at a downtown Lewiston park.)<\/p>\n<p>The scene shows William A. Saunders, Class of 1899, carrying the ball over the goal line.
