Tied to Be Fit<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The mid-1900s \u201cfreshman rules\u201d required first-year men to wear green bow ties and garnet-and-black beanies until Thanksgiving. (Women had to wear bibs.) The late Keith Wilbur \u201945 wore this tie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five-Color Flag<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

This is a detail of a Chinese flag given to Bates by Wayne Jordan, Class of 1906. A much-admired alumnus, Jordan was Bates\u2019 first Rhodes Scholar. He did YMCA work in China as a foreign secretary, including famine relief, from 1914 until his death, of typhus, in 1924.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flag\u2019s five-color design was China\u2019s first as a republic in 1912.<\/p>\n\n\n

Sailor Man<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

This iconic \u201cDixie Cup\u201d sailor\u2019s cap belonged to the late Philip Isaacson \u201947 when he was stationed at Bates with the Navy\u2019s V-12 officer training program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Boston Bates Alumnae Club commissioned Bates\u2019 first Wedgwood plate in 1939 to celebrate 75 years since Bates became a college.<\/p>\n\n\n
