(Grace Link &#8217;19\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>What a way to encounter a college: Instead of walking around the campus on a traditional tour, the high schoolers spent the day immersed in one of Bates\u2019 most esteemed extracurriculars, the club that defined the college experience of their teacher, Andrew Jarboe \u201905.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy students are high-achieving juniors,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.matchschool.org\/team\/mhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jarboe, who teaches AP history at Match<\/a>. \u201cMany of them will be first-generation college students. They have the stuff to succeed at a college like Bates. (Grace Link &#8217;19\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jarboe debated all four years at Bates, often traveling across the country to attend tournaments in lieu of relaxing on weekends. Waving toward the debate room, he added, \u201cThat\u2019s where I devoted all my energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Phi Beta Kappa history major at Bates, Jarboe got his teaching start with Teach for America, later earning a doctorate in history from Northeastern University. In addition to his Match teaching position, Jarboe holds a faculty appointment at the Berklee College of Music.<\/p>\n<p>His passion for Bates debate hasn\u2019t waned since he graduated. (Grace Link &#8217;19\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A few days before their trip to Bates, Jarboe told his students that instead of just walking around campus, they were going to learn how to debate with college students. \u201cThey had a mini freak-out,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Freak-out aside, the high schoolers picked up debate skills quickly, working one-on-one with Batesies who were complete strangers to them just hours before. One young woman mentioned how much she liked being able to actually interact with college students. (Grace Link &#8217;19\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe kids are super engaged,\u201d said Harry Meadows \u201919 of Princeton Junction, N.J., who led the morning workshop. \u201cThey\u2019re picking it up really fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As director of novice affairs for Quimby, he\u2019s experienced at teaching first-years the ropes, but this was his first time working with high schoolers. In the afternoon, the Match students, partnered with Bates debaters, participated in their own mock debates where they had to argue for or against editing fetal DNA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe quality of debating they did was wonderful,\u201d said Katie Ziegler \u201919 of <span class=\"batesDirContactHome\"> Katonah, N.Y.,\u00a0<\/span>the Quimby vice president and coordinator of the workshop\u2019s logistics. \u201cWhen you first learn how to debate, it\u2019s completely overwhelming. The Match students really rose to the challenge and gave great speeches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So why the workshop?
