But as one semester led to the next, \u201cI learned to step beyond\u201d those initial goals. Way beyond, it turns out.<\/p>\n<p>By senior year, Rothmann was editor of <em>The Bates Student<\/em> while also serving as\u00a0co-captain of her cross country and track and field teams. An English major, she completed an honors thesis on the autobiographic fiction of Charles Dickens.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #009779;\"><em>Video by Theophil Syslo<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sarah Rothmann | Voices from the Class of 2019\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nd-S8uhio-o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A minor in education studies with experience in local schools, she discovered a connection between teaching and journalism that had eluded her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was an either\/or,\u201d she says of her interest in the two fields. \u201cBut I\u2019ve learned that they blend very nicely.&#8221; As editor, she&#8217;s &#8220;almost assumed the role of a teacher to help my writers navigate a path.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for that job? She recently accepted a Fulbright Student award to teach English in the Czech Republic in 2019\u201320.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI just didn\u2019t want to take any risks,\u201d recalls Rothmann of her first-year mindset.
