Led by Gillett, the squad&#8217;s first-year phenom from Seattle, Cold Front qualified for the national tournament for the first time in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Three years later, the future is here for Gillett and the team: They head into the national tourney, which takes place Saturday and Sunday in College Station, Texas, <a href=\"http:\/\/collegechampionships.usaultimate.org\/d3-women\/schedule-results\/\">undefeated and seeded first.<\/a><\/p>\n<section class=\"highlight-box \"><\/p>\n<h6>Ultimate tournament livestream<\/h6>\n<p>Following Saturday&#8217;s pool play, Sunday&#8217;s semifinals and finals will be<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/usaultimate\"> livestreamed on the USA Ultimate&#8217;s YouTube site.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n<\/section>\n<p>While Gillett&#8217;s arrival immediately raised the team&#8217;s sights and bolstered its talent (she was already a member of Team USA&#8217;s Under-19 squad), Cold Front&#8217;s progress since then has been a collective effort, says Gillett.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Honestly, I think I had the biggest impact my first year. Active in the college&#8217;s sustainability movement as a member of the EcoReps, a student task force for green initiatives on campus, Gillett has been a pivotal figure in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2018\/07\/25\/gardeners-cultivate-a-growth-mindset-as-bates-produce-reaches-diners\/\">the founding of the new college garden<\/a>, The Plot.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote her thesis on &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/scarab.bates.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1210&amp;context=envr_studies_theses\">Understanding Differences Between the Three Sister Polyculture and Monoculture Growing of Corn, Beans, and Squash.<\/a>\u00a0(In her acknowledgments, she gives a shout-out to Cold Front &#8220;for the unquantifiable love and happiness you have given me over the past four years.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Among ultimate enthusiasts, Gillett is best-known for her talent, and\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she&#8217;s\u00a0a finalist for the 2019 Donovan Award, the sport&#8217;s national player-of-the-year award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yet at Bates, her ultimate ultimate legacy, as it were, will likely be a team culture that welcomes and teaches players with little or\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_117886\" style=\"width: 1630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/08\/180724_Garden_0177.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117886\" class=\"wp-image-117886 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/08\/180724_Garden_0177.jpg\" alt=\"Last July, Josie Gillett \u201919 (left) and Katharine Gaillard \u201919 pose among some of their 180 tomato plants in the Plot, the college garden near campus. It really is,&#8221; Maddie Sirois \u201821 of Maplewood, N.J. &#8220;I wasn\u2019t originally going to try out but everyone gathered behind me and really encouraged me to do it. And it\u2019s been great.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;She\u2019s a total role model for everyone on this team.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, Gillett and Cold Front aren&#8217;t doing it alone. The team has two part-time coaches, and its co-founder, Lynne Lewis, Elmer Campbell Professor of Economics, serves as the team&#8217;s faculty adviser.<\/p>\n<p>Gillett is humble about her own talent and leadership. But when it comes to teaching the sport, she takes charge. And there\u2019s one word that seems to describe Gillett best: patient.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Something I\u2019ve learned as a returning player is the patience that\u2019s needed to teach these fundamentals of the sport,&#8221; says Anna Helms &#8217;20 of Larchmont, N.Y.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s really made me respect her a lot.
