{"id":124833,"date":"2019-05-24T11:40:12","date_gmt":"2019-05-24T15:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=124833"},"modified":"2023-01-24T14:46:37","modified_gmt":"2023-01-24T19:46:37","slug":"what-to-expect-when-youre-expecting-commencement-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2019\/05\/24\/what-to-expect-when-youre-expecting-commencement-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"What to expect when you&#8217;re expecting Commencement 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four hundred sixty-nine members of the Class of 2019 will receive their Bates degrees on Sunday, May 26, at the college\u2019s 153rd Commencement.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony will take place on the Coram Library Terrace on the Historic Quad beginning at 10 a.m.<\/p>\n<h5>Livestream<\/h5>\n<p>The college\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/commencement\/live\/\">Commencement livestream<\/a> features a four-camera setup that promises to bring viewers right onto the Quad.<\/p>\n<p>The livestream begins at approximately 9:20 a.m. as the processional, which starts on Alumni Walk, reaches the Historic Quad. At this time, the forecast for Sunday morning is for less than a 50 percent chance of a passing shower between 8am and 2pm. No forecast at this time suggests heavy or prolonged rain Sunday morning. Unless the forecast changes, we will plan for an outdoor Commencement \u2014 and enjoy our interesting spring weather together. This clip shows the 1934 performance of Aristophanes&#8217; <em>The Birds<\/em>\u00a0by the 4-A Players (now the Robinson Players).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"1934 Commencement Play: &quot;The Birds&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o4-CNKXfqWY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>Senior Address<\/h5>\n<p>Claire Ruth Naughton \u201919, an environmental studies major and four-year volleyball player from Darien, Conn., will use the Icarus myth as the jumping-off point for her Senior Address.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s well-known that Icarus was told not to fly too close to the sun (a metaphor for hubris). Fewer are aware, says Naughton, that Icarus was also told to stay far above the sea, lest his wings get wet. The Bates Canopy map <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/canopy\/map\/\">has your answers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5>New to the Stage<\/h5>\n<p>This year&#8217;s Commencement will be the first since last fall\u2019s completion of the Coram Library Terrace. This project extended the library\u2019s porch 15 feet outward from the original structure, eliminating the need to install a temporary wooden extension.
