{"id":125834,"date":"2019-07-23T12:32:13","date_gmt":"2019-07-23T16:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=125834"},"modified":"2019-08-09T14:00:17","modified_gmt":"2019-08-09T18:00:17","slug":"nescac-heat-poll-for-july-20-21-tufts-flips-the-script","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2019\/07\/23\/nescac-heat-poll-for-july-20-21-tufts-flips-the-script\/","title":{"rendered":"NESCAC Heat Poll for July 20\u201321: Jumbos flip the script"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>And the last shall be first.<\/p>\n<p>Typically an also-ran in our occasional wintertime review of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/tag\/nescac-chill-poll\/\">coldest schools in the NESCAC<\/a>, Tufts University flipped the script to win our first-ever summertime ranking of the hottest colleges in the &#8216;Cac, as measured during the July 20-21 warm spell.<\/p>\n<section class=\"highlight-box highlight-box-green\"><p><strong>Hot, hot, hot<br \/>\n<\/strong>Since this story was published on July 23, the month of July has gone into the record books as the hottest month ever worldwide.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>The Jumbos vaulted into first place by hitting 101.7 degrees at 2:09 p.m. on July 20, edging second-place Wesleyan, which topped out at 98.9 degrees the next day.<\/p>\n<p>Finishing third was Amherst, with 98.3 degrees on July 20. (Photograph by Portlande)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In our six prior wintertime NESCAC Chill Polls, Tufts stayed warm and cozy, never faring better (or colder) than 8th. That&#8217;s due to its relative proximity to the ocean plus the urban heat island effect, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/heat-islands\">keeps built-up areas warmer than rural areas.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In summer, that heat island effect might&#8217;ve given Tufts, located in the Greater Boston area, the winning edge.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, the colleges at the bottom of last weekend&#8217;s Heat Poll ranking \u2014 ones that typical vie for wintertime Chill Poll supremacy \u2014 are mostly rural colleges.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the full list:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/personal-weather-station\/dashboard?ID=KMAMEDFO17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1.
