Total yearly giving to Bates has more than doubled since 2013.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so grateful for the support of Bates alumni, parents, and friends as we work to drive academic excellence, expand access for talented students, and build institutional strength across all aspects of the Bates experience,\u201d said President Clayton Spencer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe generosity of our community signals a deep and sincere commitment to Bates, generating momentum in the present and optimism for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gifts to the Bates Fund totaled $7.25 million, another all-time record, propelled by the highest dollar totals ever from the Bates Parents Fund ($1,826,028) and the Friends of Bates Athletics ($975,000).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Bates\u2019 alumni participation rate historically ranks near the top among U.S. liberal arts colleges, and 43 percent of Bates alumni made gifts in 2019.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A key component of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/campaign\/\">the $300 million Bates Campaign<\/a>, the Bates Fund provides real-time support for financial aid, faculty and academic programs, student life, and the arts. Launched with public celebrations in May 2017, the multiyear campaign now stands at $220 million in gifts and pledges toward the $300 million goal.<\/p>\n<p>Bates\u2019 alumni participation rate historically ranks near the top among U.S. liberal arts colleges, and 43 percent of Bates alumni made gifts in 2019. Also a robust Bates tradition, parent participation reached 36.5 percent in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>In a year that saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2019\/01\/18\/bates-schuler-initiative-millennial-alumni\/\">Bates join the national Schuler Initiative<\/a>, a multi-college collaboration to research and develop approaches to increase engagement with the tradition of philanthropy among young alumni, Bates deployed the college\u2019s first crowdfunding effort to expand the ways donors can directly improve the experience of Bates students with gifts both great and small.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_127346\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/09\/1989-Parade-Photo-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127346\" class=\"wp-image-127346 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/09\/1989-Parade-Photo-1-900x675.jpg\" alt=\"In the 2019 giving year, the Class of 1989 broke all giving and attendance records for a 30th Reunion class.\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/09\/1989-Parade-Photo-1-900x675.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/09\/1989-Parade-Photo-1-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/09\/1989-Parade-Photo-1-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/09\/1989-Parade-Photo-1.jpg 1640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-127346\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In fiscal 2019, the Class of 1989 broke all giving and attendance records for a 30th Reunion class.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Completed within a few hours in January, the crowdfunding effort raised about $4,950 from 110 donors \u2014 for an average gift of under $50 \u2014 to purchase 13 new laptops for Ladd Library\u2019s increasingly popular loaner pool. Once an alternative to a desktop computer, mobile technology is essential for today\u2019s academics, including coursework and community-engaged experiences.<\/p>\n<p>In early March, the college\u2019s annual community-giving celebration, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givecampus.com\/schools\/BatesCollege\/2019-it-s-a-great-day-to-be-a-bobcat\">Great Day to be a Bobcat<\/a>, generated $631,272 in gifts to the college. The goal of 1,855 donors (a number that reflects the college\u2019s founding date) was far surpassed with 2,281 alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, and friends making gifts.<\/p>\n<p>And over three days in late May, <a href=\"https:\/\/bates.prestosports.com\/general\/2018-19\/releases\/20190619n3aolm?fbclid=IwAR16BUxVSFjkDeB33NCck69o7o5p_ZNdkrDk5y9xutBhYWcE3SuBPGIcZug\">the first Friends of Bates Athletics Giving Challenge<\/a> drew 1,333 donors to its ranks, more than four times the goal of 310 donors, raising a total of $189,127 for all 31 Bobcat varsity teams.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_127347\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a style=\"font-size: 0.9em; text-align: center;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/09\/190526_Commencement_4620.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127347\" class=\"wp-image-127347 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/09\/190526_Commencement_4620-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"Senior Gift co-chair Erika Lamere \u201919 speaks to the Commencement audience, joined on the platform by co-chairs Elizah Laurenceau \u201919 and Taylor Lough \u201919. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During fiscal 2019, Bates alumni celebrating their five-year Reunions contributed $1.21 million to the college with an overall participation rate of 49 percent.
