{"id":128671,"date":"2019-11-14T12:50:56","date_gmt":"2019-11-14T17:50:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=128671"},"modified":"2021-06-08T11:20:41","modified_gmt":"2021-06-08T15:20:41","slug":"we-had-each-others-backs-memories-from-volleyballs-perfect-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2019\/11\/14\/we-had-each-others-backs-memories-from-volleyballs-perfect-season\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;We had each other\u2019s backs&#8217;: Memories from volleyball&#8217;s perfect season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thirty years ago last Monday, Nov. 11, at halftime of what would be a lopsided loss for the Bates football team, an announcement came over the Garcelon Field PA speakers: Over at Alumni Gym, the undefeated volleyball team was about to begin its championship match in the Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We never really had many fans,&#8221; recalls Laurie Plante Graumann &#8217;90, a senior middle hitter on the 1989 team. But as word spread on campus after the halftime announcement, people flocked to Alumni in a scene ripped from a Hollywood screenplay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The gym was packed with people cheering for us!\u201d Plante Graumann says.<\/p>\n<p>The Bates fans that day saw history in the making. Led by fifth-year coach <a href=\"https:\/\/gobatesbobcats.com\/sports\/2020\/6\/4\/scholar-athlete-society-2013-Assistant-Athletic-Director-Marsha-A-Graef.aspx\">Marsha Graef<\/a>, the Bobcats were 35-0 and hosting St. John Fisher for the ECAC title, during an era when the regional championship was the furthest a NESCAC team could advance.<\/p>\n<p>The Bobcats won the match 3-0 (15-11, 15-9, 15-9) and completed an unprecedented perfect season: 36-0.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_128850\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/11\/volleyball-1989-008-edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-128850\" class=\"size-large wp-image-128850\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/11\/volleyball-1989-008-edit-690x900.jpg\" alt=\"Co-captains Michele Feroah (right) and Cathy Meoni celebrate Bates' victory in the 1989 ECAC championship match, capping a 36-0 season. (Bates Communications)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI never guessed at the beginning of the year that this would happen,\u201d Graef said to <a href=\"https:\/\/scarab.bates.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=3454&amp;context=bates_student\"><em>The Bates Student<\/em><\/a>. \u201cWe had a tougher schedule this year and thought we might drop a match here and there, especially at the Ithaca and Eastern Connecticut tourneys. But this team is the best that I have ever coached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And 30 years later, that year\u2019s squad of 10 women still holds the best win-loss record in Bates athletics history.<\/p>\n<p>Graef came to Bates in 1985 and started building the Bates volleyball program into what the <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called \u201ca quiet dynasty in our midst.\u201d Jumping from a .500 record the year before to a 28-7 mark in \u201985, volleyball soon became the school\u2019s winningest team.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #009779;\"><i>Watch how fifth-year head coach Melissa DeRan and the current Bobcats are reconnecting with the alumni who established a tradition of success.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Tradition of Excellence: Bates College Volleyball\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vrfoZKUP_W4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was the most positive, energetic coach I\u2019ve ever had,\u201d outside hitter Emily Gabler \u201987 says of Graef. One of the most admired coaches in the college\u2019s history, Graef died in November 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarsha not only motivated us as a team, she also customized her coaching to each individual player. So she was immediately effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an era when walk-on players could often make a big impact, Gabler played a key role in making the Bobcats the class of New England by \u201crecruiting\u201d a powerhouse outside hitter, Rachel Clayton \u201990.<\/p>\n<p>Clayton arrived on campus in 1986. Initially, she was focused on playing softball for Bobcat head coach Sherry Deschaine. She did that very well, <a href=\"https:\/\/gobatesbobcats.com\/sports\/2020\/8\/4\/softball-team-record-book.aspx?id=785\">setting numerous Bates records that still stand<\/a>. (Scott Pim &#8217;93)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gabler, meanwhile, was still on campus as an assistant coach on Graef\u2019s volleyball staff. After seeing what Clayton did athletically on the softball diamond, there was no doubt in Gabler\u2019s mind that the 5-foot-11 Clayton could succeed on the volleyball court.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEverything fell into place once Rachel joined the team.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Gabler \u201ctaught me how to play volleyball,\u201d Clayton says. \u201cDuring the summer of \u201987, we worked at one of the gyms in my hometown, and I learned how to play. It was very difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hard work paid off. Over the course of her career as an outside hitter, the Bates volleyball program won 111 matches while only losing eight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything fell into place once Rachel joined the team,\u201d Plante Graumann recalls. \u201cOpponents were very afraid when she was hitting the ball. (Scott Pim &#8217;93)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cLaurie keeps complimenting me but I don\u2019t remember being that good,\u201d Clayton says. \u201cI could pick up sports fairly easily, but volleyball has such a specific skill set. I had to really work at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMichele had ridiculous hands. (Scott Pim &#8217;93)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the 1989 season rolled along, Bates racked up wins at tournaments throughout the Northeast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The players embraced a trip to upstate New York in October, where Bates was actually an underdog.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat stands out for me is the Ithaca College tournament when we went up against Cortland State,\u201d middle hitter Julie Roche Simplicio \u201991 said. \u201cThey were a powerhouse in the New York system and we were this small liberal arts school in Maine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe traveled 10 hours in a van and, sure enough, we took the win. That was the pivotal point in the season.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The win over No. 10 nationally ranked Cortland State propelled Bates into the national rankings themselves. Did we really do that?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1988 to 1990, the Bates volleyball team won 51 consecutive matches. But NESCAC rules prevented Bates from competing in the NCAA Championships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were all really disappointed that teams we beat were going to nationals and we couldn\u2019t,\u201d Plante Graumann says. \u201cMy dad talked to Marsha about that, and she said to him, \u2018Mr. Plante, you sent your daughter to Bates to get an education, and that is the No. 1 priority. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington University won the national title in 1989 with a record of 39-6. Bates finished its undefeated campaign ranked 10th in the country. Only two women\u2019s volleyball teams that have won an NCAA Division III championship have also recorded undefeated seasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1993, the NESCAC dropped its NCAA ban and Bates promptly went 41-9, advancing to the regional semifinals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt would have been great to see how far we could have advanced with the talent we had in 1989,\u201d Roche Simplicio says. \u201cWe had so many great players, and as we grew together as friends off the court, that translated onto the court. We had each other\u2019s backs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graef led the volleyball program for 14 seasons and the women\u2019s basketball team for seven. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe had a keg,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plante Graumann recalls. \u201cAnd Coach did a keg stand! Seeing Coach do that was just crazy. But she was happy right along with us, she was as much a part of that season, if not more, than we were.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1998, Graef moved from coaching to athletics administration as coordinator of physical education and club sports. Appropriately enough, her final season at the helm of the volleyball team netted yet another ECAC North championship. She retired in 2013, and died at age 61 after a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even while battling cancer, Graef still went above and beyond for her former players.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI remember when I was inducted into the <a href=\"https:\/\/gobatesbobcats.com\/sports\/2020\/6\/4\/x-2gemz.aspx\">Scholar-Athlete Society<\/a> in 2015, she was in the middle of one of her chemo sessions,\u201d Clayton says. \u201cAnd she came up [to Bates] from wherever she was and presented the award to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe was an amazing woman.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_128686\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-128686\" class=\"wp-image-128686 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/11\/VolleyBallTeamPhoto-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"The Bates volleyball team with the ECAC Championship trophy.
