{"id":130809,"date":"2020-02-13T12:37:33","date_gmt":"2020-02-13T17:37:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=130809"},"modified":"2020-02-14T16:52:50","modified_gmt":"2020-02-14T21:52:50","slug":"video-45-girls-25-schools-one-great-day-to-be-a-bobcat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2020\/02\/13\/video-45-girls-25-schools-one-great-day-to-be-a-bobcat\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: 45 girls, 25 schools, one great day to be a Bobcat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ellie Bauer \u201922, a field hockey goalkeeper from Denver, was teaching a young girl how to hold her stick during a recent sports clinic offered by Bates Athletics.<\/p>\n<p>After a few minutes, the girl looked up at Bauer and asked, \u201cCan we just dance?\u201d And Bauer replied, &#8220;Of course!&#8221;\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So we took a time-out, she danced and shook everything out, and then we went back to the sport,\u201d recalls Bauer.<\/p>\n<p>The lesson \u2014 sports can offer unexpected fun and friendship \u2014 was a good one as Bobcats from the college&#8217;s women&#8217;s teams celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day by hosting 45 schoolgirls, ages 5\u00ad\u201314, for a free clinic in the Gray Athletic Building on Feb. 8.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #009779;\"><em>Video by Aaron Morse.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lead Her Forward: National Girls &amp; Women in Sports Day at Bates College\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3o7sMUBcGQ8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another lesson from the day: Sports help young people on the road to self-discovery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really found myself through softball and athletics,\u201d says Kirsten Pelletier \u201920, a softball pitcher from Readfield, Maine. Paying it forward is what she liked most about Women in Sports Day, \u201cproviding a platform for younger girls to really find themselves through athletics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seventy-six Bates students \u2014 representing Bobcat women\u2019s teams in field hockey, softball, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, rowing, track and field, cross country, skiing, swimming and diving, squash, and golf \u2014 helped to put on the clinic, now in its second year.<\/p>\n<p>Clinic participants came from 25 schools throughout southern Maine and Massachusetts, and two from Portland, Ore., who were visiting a relative on the Bates coaching staff.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_130817\" style=\"width: 1929px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2020\/02\/edit-200208_National_Girls_Women_Sports_0014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-130817\" class=\"wp-image-130817 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2020\/02\/edit-200208_National_Girls_Women_Sports_0014.jpg\" alt=\"National Girls and Women in Sports Day held in the Gray Cage followed by the women's basketball game vs. Trinity in Alumni GymRegistration begins at 12:30 pm in Alumni Gym lobby, and then the free sports clinics for girls ages 5 and up will take place in Gray Cage from 1-3. The plan is to have a large group warm up, then stations where student-athletes and coaches from various teams will have an activity related to their sport. I know last year rowing brought down some rowing machines, field hockey had a shooting into a goal station, things like that. There will also be a poster making station for the basketball game. In addition, the plan is to have time for the girls to get autographs from the women's basketball team prior to the game. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to have role models,\u201d says goalkeeper Bauer. \u201cAnd for a day, we could be their role models, even if was just for eight minutes learning how to stick-stop. Those little moments can go a long way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya Seshan \u201920 of Wilton, Conn., got to explain to her young charges what a rowing coxswain does. \u201cThey were funny and cute. They were like, \u2018You mean you just have fun with your teammates and motivate them, get them going, and steer the boat?!
