{"id":131371,"date":"2020-03-05T15:44:10","date_gmt":"2020-03-05T20:44:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=131371"},"modified":"2024-06-11T09:56:52","modified_gmt":"2024-06-11T13:56:52","slug":"bates-students-get-a-no-pressure-look-at-the-law-with-a-lewiston-judge-no-less","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2020\/03\/05\/bates-students-get-a-no-pressure-look-at-the-law-with-a-lewiston-judge-no-less\/","title":{"rendered":"Bates students get an inside look at the law \u2014 from a Lewiston court judge, no less"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s disparity day in Judge John Beliveau\u2019s weekly law gathering on campus, and on this Thursday in February, about a dozen Bates students and staff members have read up on Supreme Court cases dealing with discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>Beliveau, an active retired judge with the Maine District Court in Lewiston, asks one student in the Commons meeting room to explain Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark 1954 case that ordered schools to desegregate.<\/p>\n<p>Another describes Korematsu v. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Beliveau peppers the presenters with questions: Who brought the case? How did it work its way up the courts? What was the court\u2019s opinion? (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The lunchtime program, \u201cA Judge\u2019s Perspective on the Law,\u201d arose in 2015 as a way for Associate Professor of Sociology Michael Rocque to add a legal dimension to one of his sociology courses.<\/p>\n<p>Beliveau, an active retired judge for the Maine District Court in Lewiston, was the perfect volunteer. \u201cJudge B\u201d to students and courthouse employees alike, his legal career spans decades. He has worked closely with several Bates student courthouse interns and has long been involved with the Bates track and field program as a volunteer assistant coach and official.<span style=\"color: #888888;\"><br clear=\"all\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith my experience over 40 years, what can I do for young college students?\u201d Beliveau says. \u201cWhat can I teach them? What can I tell them about my experiences?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cases and statutes that Beliveau walks his weekly audience through encompass both the daily life of a Bates student and the social and legal forces that shape American society. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe will go into current events,\u201d Beliveau says. \u201cWe talked about impeachment, gun control, the First Amendment. We spent time on impeachment, because it was the thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the lunchtime sessions as in his courtroom, Bates students are \u201clike my right hand,\u201d Beliveau says. Koman helps the judge communicate with students and makes suggestions for the order of lessons \u2014 \u201ceasy\u201d stuff like civil rights comes first, and then, once the group has gotten to know and trust each other, more-fraught topics like abortion and the death penalty<\/p>\n<p>Koman is also an intern at the district courthouse on Lewiston\u2019s Lisbon Street, primarily acting as a court reporter on family cases. I used to read case briefs before class, eating breakfast, and it was the most enjoyable part of my morning each week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though the seminar is still affiliated with Rocque\u2019s sociology courses \u2014 his students can go to the gatherings and write a paper about them if they\u2019d like \u2014 anyone on campus is free to attend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to know your fundamental rights,\u201d Koman says.
