{"id":132471,"date":"2020-04-22T18:29:27","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T22:29:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=132471"},"modified":"2020-04-30T08:28:09","modified_gmt":"2020-04-30T12:28:09","slug":"video-student-performers-go-virtual-for-the-village-club-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/22\/video-student-performers-go-virtual-for-the-village-club-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: Bittersweet notes from Village Club student musicians"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>It didn\u2019t replace the feeling of performing before friends and fellow students in the warm confines of the Benjamin Mays Center at Bates.<\/p>\n<p>But it still felt good, said Maddie Hallowell \u201920 of North Haven, Maine, after performing for a Zoom-based installment of the long-running Village Club Series, a staple of campus entertainment offered by the college&#8217;s Campus Life office since 1993.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt really great to see who was watching,&#8221; she says. &#8220;It was the first time that I felt connected to Bates,\u201d since the college went to remote learning in March.<\/p>\n<section class=\"highlight-box highlight-box-green\"><p><strong>VCS Highlights<\/strong><br \/>\nMore highlights from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLz3kCyMrnLek6U5qX87WVYUvgcS4PKFRR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent virtual Village Club Series events<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>Bates Communication videographer Theophil Syslo caught up with several VCS Showcase performers to hear their sometimes bittersweet experiences of performing music as a way to still feel connected to their college and friends.<\/p>\n<h4>Maddie Hallowell \u201920<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"VCS Showcase: Maddie Hallowell \u201920\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NyAPYfDQON8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Senyo Ohene &#8217;20<\/h4>\n<p>For Senyo Ohene &#8217;20 of Accra, Ghana, it was a reminder of why he loves Bates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe events that bring us together: all the fun things, watching people display their talents,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Just because we\u2019re not all together, doesn&#8217;t mean we need to lose those things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"VCS Showcase: Senyo Ohene &#039;20\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oRWx0h5QlJs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Meg O&#8217;Brien &#8217;22 and Bryce O&#8217;Brien &#8217;20<\/h4>\n<p>A sweet moment (1:08) came from siblings Meg O\u2019Brien \u201922 and Bryce O\u2019Brien &#8217;20 of Bristol, R.I., who performed John Prine\u2019s \u201cAngel From Montgomery\u201d as a tribute to the late singer-songwriter.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first VCS performance for the siblings, who&#8217;d long wanted to perform at a VCS. &#8220;It just didn&#8217;t work out before,&#8221; says Meg. This time, \u201cwe decided, just gotta do it,\u201d says Bryce.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been a good way to keep the Bates community connected, amongst all the things Bates is doing to keep us connected,&#8221; adds Meg.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"VCS Showcase: Meg O&#039;Brien &#039;22 and Bryce O&#039;Brien &#039;20\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q_0gVgNG-nc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Katia Ryan &#8217;23 and Sean Ryan &#8217;85<\/h4>\n<p>A humorous VCS Showcase moment came from Katia Ryan \u201923 of Amsterdam, N.Y., and her dad, Sean Ryan \u201985. \u201cHey, shoutout to anyone from the Class of \u201985 watching this on their MySpace account,\u201d said Ryan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMusic has been helpful: a time to disconnect from your phone and computer and just play an instrument,&#8221; says Katia. &#8220;What was truest and the same and what Bates is all about, was the energy and kindness of everyone. All the chats and people texting me after.
