{"id":134601,"date":"2020-06-26T12:20:28","date_gmt":"2020-06-26T16:20:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=134601"},"modified":"2021-08-02T17:21:38","modified_gmt":"2021-08-02T21:21:38","slug":"bates-admission-video-series-wins-national-communications-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2020\/06\/26\/bates-admission-video-series-wins-national-communications-award\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Wow!&#8217; Bates Admission video series wins national communications award"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A creative collaboration between two Bates College offices has struck gold with an award-winning video series that sheds light on the college search, application, and financial aid process with wit, warmth, and candor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Created for the 2019\u201320 admission cycle, Bates\u2019 <em>Ask the (College) Experts <\/em>recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.case.org\/awards\/circle-excellence\/2020\/ask-experts-homegrown-video-campaign\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won a Grand Gold award<\/a> from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, the preeminent organization for higher education communications and advancement professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The video series, produced by Bates staff and featuring staff and faculty, won its award in CASE\u2019s annual \u201cCircle of Excellence\u201d recognition program in a Communications category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collaboration between the college\u2019s Admission and Communications offices sought to creatively address a perennial challenge: how to give myriad audiences concise, accurate, and understandable information about Bates, the liberal arts, and the admission and financial aid application process itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-video-embed-intro\">The video series Ask the (College) Experts kicks off with &#8220;Where Do I Start?&#8221; featuring Associate Dean of Admission Liz McGonigle, and with videography by Theophil Syslo and graphic design by Olivia Orr of Bates Communications.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<lite-youtube videoid=\"tRQhbiv_PZU\" params=\"modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0\" playlabel=\"Where do I start? | Ask the College Experts\" title=\"Where do I start? | Ask the College Experts\" >\n\t\t\t<\/lite-youtube>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur audiences crave and deserve straightforward answers to common yet complex questions,\u201d said Leigh Weisenburger, dean of admission and financial aid at Bates. \u201cWe\u2019re always developing ways to provide prospective students and families with just that: accurate, concise, and direct information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis project gave us the opportunity to make this information widely available, authentically answering a clear need in a way that just might lower some stress while increasing awareness of, and trust in, Bates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Featuring college faculty and staff from Admission, Student Financial Services, and Purposeful Work, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLz3kCyMrnLekOC82_yHDQxcZ0sdDK-eJK\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the series\u2019 11 videos<\/a> cover both the basics, such as \u201cWhere Do I Start?\u201d and \u201cWhat Does \u2018Liberal Arts\u2019 Mean?\u201d and specifics, such as \u201cWhat Should I Know About Financial Aid?\u201d The series also offers career-exploration insights through the lens of the college\u2019s nationally recognized Purposeful Work program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-video-embed-intro\">Dean of Admission and Financial Aid Leigh Weisenburger answers &#8220;What Does &#8216;Test-Optional&#8217; Mean?&#8221; for the video series.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<lite-youtube videoid=\"bUCdkeT5Ph4\" params=\"modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0\" playlabel=\"What does &#039;test optional&#039; mean? | Ask the College Experts\" title=\"What does &#039;test optional&#039; mean? | Ask the College Experts\" >\n\t\t\t<\/lite-youtube>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWow!\u201d the CASE judges noted. \u201cThis entry is so impressive. We really liked how user-friendly and bite-sized the content is. Excellent use of staff expertise and spot-on about the audience&#8217;s needs. The videos are both entertaining and informative, and just the perfect length.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The video series was designed to help prospective students and families, as well as secondary-school counselors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CASE judges noted that the series \u201cclearly hit a (good) nerve with students and guidance counselors.\u201d Indeed, engagement metrics indicate that various online audiences found value in the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Distributed through myriad channels (YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and email), the videos attracted more than 850,000 views of at least 10 seconds, which is a standard measure of whether a video is \u201cseen.\u201d That viewership is more than double the total number of 10-second views of all Admission videos over the prior three years. One prospective-parent segment of the audience was particularly engaged: Eight out of 10 who watched at least 25 percent of a video stayed for the entire piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-video-embed-intro\"><em>The video series Ask the (College) Experts also includes &#8220;I Got In! How Do I Choose Where to Go?&#8221; featuring Senior Associate Dean of Admission Jared Rivers.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<lite-youtube videoid=\"mCpNmJU7agM\" params=\"modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0\" playlabel=\"I got in! How do I choose where to go? | Ask the College Experts\" title=\"I got in!
