{"id":134869,"date":"2020-07-23T12:04:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-23T16:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=134869"},"modified":"2020-07-24T12:23:29","modified_gmt":"2020-07-24T16:23:29","slug":"campus-construction-update-july-24-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2020\/07\/23\/campus-construction-update-july-24-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Campus Construction Update: July 24, 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cThings are looking awesome\u201d at the Veterans Plaza construction site, reports Shelby Burgau, who is managing the project for Bates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2020\/05\/13\/campus-construction-update-may-15-2020\/\">As we wrote in May<\/a>, the plaza will be a tranquil place that honors military service as a form of public service while acknowledging war&#8217;s universal impacts. In the month-plus since work began at the site, near North Bardwell Street and the Residential Village:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>electric service was run in;<\/li><li>a concrete slab was placed and topped with a \u201csetting bed\u201d of asphalt to support paving blocks, and most of those pavers were placed;<\/li><li>trees were planted and sod was laid;<\/li><li>and seven benches were installed around the center of the site.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1919\" height=\"1279\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2020\/07\/2007234_CCU_VeteransPlaza_2297_dlh-1.jpg\" alt=\"The Residential Village is reflected in  a puddle made by sprinklers at Veterans Plaza. (Doug Hubley\/Bates College)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The pavers are identical to those on Alumni Walk except for their color, which is a bit lighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 14 new trees are Eastern redbuds (<em>Cercis canadensis<\/em>), selected for their branching habit and spring blossoms by design firm Michael Boucher Landscape Architecture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReally, at this point, it&#8217;s just finishing touches,&#8221; Burgau says. Nelson Metal Fabrication of South Portland, Maine, is making the marker.
