{"id":135849,"date":"2020-09-16T16:12:35","date_gmt":"2020-09-16T20:12:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=135849"},"modified":"2021-03-17T12:34:43","modified_gmt":"2021-03-17T16:34:43","slug":"bates-bobcats-are-a-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2020\/09\/16\/bates-bobcats-are-a-team\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: How Bobcats redefine teamwork during the COVID-19 era"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Bates Bobcats are a team \u2014 no matter what. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This fall, Bates athletes are being tested like never before, with intercollegiate competition canceled due to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/fall-2020\/athletics\/\" target=\"_blank\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>. Last Saturday,&nbsp;the tennis and&nbsp;soccer programs became the first teams at Bates to hold practices in six months. (Video by Aaron Morse\/Bates College)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I feel like during the summer, especially when we heard that we didn&#8217;t have a season, it really hurt everyone, everyone was really upset about it,&#8221; said So Kim &#8217;21, a women&#8217;s soccer player from Thornhill, Ontario. &#8220;But now getting the team back together, it feels good to be with everyone. It feels good to practice with everyone.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Various protocols are in place to make practice sessions safe for all. Sessions are limited to one hour and to 10 participants at a time for now. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s definitely interesting,&#8221; said Peder Bakken &#8217;21, a men&#8217;s soccer player from Seattle. &#8220;The first half hour or so is usually good. And then once the mask starts getting wet it&#8217;s not as comfortable. But it&#8217;s the new normal, no complaints. I&#8217;m just happy we can be outside and playing again.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across campus, first-year students are getting to know each other and meeting upperclass students. It&#8217;s all a bit harder with COVID protocols in place.
