{"id":138058,"date":"2021-01-22T16:27:33","date_gmt":"2021-01-22T21:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=138058"},"modified":"2021-01-22T16:58:46","modified_gmt":"2021-01-22T21:58:46","slug":"recalling-the-late-henry-aarons-friendship-with-benjamin-mays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2021\/01\/22\/recalling-the-late-henry-aarons-friendship-with-benjamin-mays\/","title":{"rendered":"Recalling the late Henry Aaron&#8217;s friendship with Benjamin Mays"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A story in the <em>Index-Journal<\/em> of Greenwood, S.C., recalls the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indexjournal.com\/news\/benjamin-mays-was-a-mentor-to-hank-aaron\/article_8e60be0d-99f9-5bf0-a375-502e359bb335.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">friendship between the late baseball great Henry Aaron and civil rights leader Benjamin Mays<\/a>, Class of 1920.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aaron died in Atlanta on Friday at the age 86.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greenwood is the site of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2017\/11\/09\/video-statue-of-benjamin-mays-20-prophet-of-freedom-unveiled\/\">Benjamin E. Mays Historical Preservation Site<\/a>, which honors the Bates graduate often called &#8220;the schoolmaster of the movement&#8221; for his mentoring of younger Black leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chris Thomas, director of the Mays site, tells reporter Greg Deal that Mays, who spent nearly three decades as president of Morehouse College, was &#8220;an ardent Braves fan and would clear his schedule&#8221; to see Aaron play at the former Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"481\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/03\/IMAGE9-481x600.jpg\" alt=\"In this undated photo, Mays talks with baseball great Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves. (Photograph courtesy of Howard University.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Aaron, the first African American player to play at a major Southern metropolitan city, according to Thomas,  reached out to Mays early in his time in Atlanta, when he had &#8220;his share of tough times, early on, because of the racial climate.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two became friends.
