{"id":138334,"date":"2021-02-25T09:34:17","date_gmt":"2021-02-25T14:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=138334"},"modified":"2023-01-24T13:45:24","modified_gmt":"2023-01-24T18:45:24","slug":"whats-in-a-lewiston-name-luiggis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2021\/02\/25\/whats-in-a-lewiston-name-luiggis\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s in a Lewiston name: Luiggi&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Bates haunt since the 1950s, Luiggi\u2019s Pizzeria, next door to the Blue Goose on the corner of Sabattus and Horton streets, is named for its founder, Luiggi Carmino Talarico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Albi to Lewiston<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Luiggi \u201cLouis\u201d Talarico was born in 1922 in Albi, Italy. After immigrating to America and settling in Lewiston, he and his wife, Annis, founded the pizzeria at the corner of Horton and Sabattus streets in 1953. The restaurant&#8217;s phone number is still the same, 782-0701.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Fergy<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Created in the 1960s, Luiggi\u2019s signature sandwich, the Fergy, is named for Lewiston police officer Arthur Ferguson, a friend of the Talarico family, who \u201cshould receive a pension for conceiving it,\u201d noted <em>The Bates Student<\/em> in 1974.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ferguson &#8220;was like 6-4 and took no crap,&#8221; says a reviewer on Yelp!, where the restaurant garners four stars out of five. &#8220;He worked with another officer named Murphy, and when Murphy and Ferguson were on the beat down on Lisbon Street all was quiet.
