{"id":138655,"date":"2021-03-18T11:51:45","date_gmt":"2021-03-18T15:51:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=138655"},"modified":"2021-03-18T16:09:02","modified_gmt":"2021-03-18T20:09:02","slug":"ask-the-college-experts-how-to-describe-activities-in-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2021\/03\/18\/ask-the-college-experts-how-to-describe-activities-in-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Ask the College Experts: How to describe activities in pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Last weekend, Bates Admission took another step toward enrolling a new class, sending out Regular Decision acceptances to prospective members of the Class of 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before long, Admission will be reviewing applications for the Class of 2026, from students whose high school experiences, since March of their sophomore year in college, have been mightily disrupted by the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those high schoolers who are worried that the activity section in their Common Application has taken a hit that might hurt their college-choice chances, the Bates Admission team has advice.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<lite-youtube videoid=\"aOYLfryp5uo\" params=\"modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0\" playlabel=\"How should I fill out the activities section of my application? | Ask the College Experts\" title=\"How should I fill out the activities section of my application? | Ask the College Experts\" >\n\t\t\t<\/lite-youtube>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe pandemic is going to affect how your activity section looks. It&#8217;s going to affect how <em>everybody&#8217;s<\/em> activities section looks,\u201d says Assistant Dean of Admission Audrey Burns \u201917. \u201cAnd I think that that should be a sense of security, a sense of calm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prospective students tend to believe that \u201cthe best application is going to have every single line packed. It\u2019ll be full, with addendum. But that&#8217;s not true.\u201d Indeed, the folks who work in Bates Admission aren\u2019t looking for an arm-length high school brag sheet \u2014 and that\u2019s more true than ever now, during the pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-highlight highlight-box highlight-box-yellow\">\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask and Receive<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLz3kCyMrnLemk7rGgQdbcBvKS2y9KaOsP\">in its second season<\/a>, <em>Ask the College Experts<\/em> helps prospective students receive information about the college-search process. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ein9e6\">Subscribe to the Bates YouTube channel<\/a> to receive new Season 2 episodes as they debut.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s true is that the Admission team will be \u201cvery understanding what our prospective students have endured because everyone, including the people reviewing your activities section and our families, have had their lives impacted. We know that it&#8217;s going to be different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether it\u2019s a senior in high school applying to college, or a Bates student working with the Center for Purposeful Work to identify meaningful work interests, it\u2019s important to communicate how one has navigated the pandemic. Actions and activities that show thoughtfulness, as opposed to quantity, &nbsp;will make a strong impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one\u2019s application to college, Burns \u201cabsolutely recommends\u201d including context about one\u2019s activities \u2014 \u201chow it has impacted, whether it simply did not exist this year, whether it&#8217;s changed platforms, what it looks like and how the pandemic has impacted you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe activities page is not a survey. It\u2019s where you can show your reflection and you can show your character.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Burns\u2019 own application to Bates included evidence of a growing interest in singing and theater \u2014 which she parlayed into four years with the <em>a capella<\/em> group The Merimanders and a double major in theater and rhetoric, including a senior thesis performance as Helena in <em>Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe activities page is not a survey. It\u2019s where you can show your reflection and you can show your character. This is another place that you can really be an agent in your application.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Burns and the Bates Admission team offer this takeaway:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Everything<\/em> that you&#8217;re doing, whether it&#8217;s an organized club or helping out at home with your family with additional responsibilities, is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking to see someone who has <em>reflected<\/em> on their experiences. What have you gleaned from your activities that is important to you? Why does it feel impactful?
