{"id":138832,"date":"2021-03-25T12:09:04","date_gmt":"2021-03-25T16:09:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=138832"},"modified":"2023-01-25T15:33:44","modified_gmt":"2023-01-25T20:33:44","slug":"video-decorating-a-big-bates-cake-and-eating-it-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2021\/03\/25\/video-decorating-a-big-bates-cake-and-eating-it-too\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: Decorating a big Bates cake and eating it too"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&#8220;A party without a cake is a meeting,&#8221; said Julia Child, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2020\/06\/10\/from-the-archives-bates-nurses-julia-child-and-a-german-ace\/\">received an honorary degree from Bates<\/a> in 1983.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Bates turned 166 years old at mid-month, the cake that helped to transform a mere gathering into a  party was decorated by Daisy Taylor, baking supervisor for Dining Services, with a creative flourish that&#8217;s become a trademark of the Bates dining operation.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<lite-youtube videoid=\"wr85V65Mhzc\" params=\"modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0\" playlabel=\"Decorating a Bates birthday cake\" title=\"Decorating a Bates birthday cake\" >\n\t\t\t<\/lite-youtube>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<figcaption>(Theophil Syslo\/Bates College)<\/figcaption>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This year, Bates held its annual giving day, Great Day to Be a Bobcat, on Bates&#8217; birthday, March 16, the day in 1855 when the charter for the Maine State Seminary, forerunner of Bates College, was signed into Maine law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s Great Day celebration, livestreamed between noon and 9 p.m. on the 16th, saw 2,664 alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, and friends make gifts \u2014 shattering the goal of 1,855 donors \u2014 totaling $927,346.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the cake?
