{"id":138993,"date":"2021-04-01T14:21:32","date_gmt":"2021-04-01T18:21:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=138993"},"modified":"2021-08-13T12:03:54","modified_gmt":"2021-08-13T16:03:54","slug":"from-the-archives-lets-play-ball","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2021\/04\/01\/from-the-archives-lets-play-ball\/","title":{"rendered":"From the Archives: Let&#8217;s play ball!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It&#8217;s opening day of the 2021 Major League baseball season, and here are some photographs and stories about the old ball game at Bates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">High Pitch<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Called a &#8220;lanky portsider&#8221; by&nbsp;<em>The Bates Student&nbsp;<\/em>and an &#8220;elongated lefty&#8221; by the&nbsp;<em>Bangor Daily News<\/em>, the late Donald Webster \u201941 wore this glove as a 6-foot-5 lefthanded Bobcat pitcher.  He was also a standout high jumper who held the Maine indoor record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a nifty curveball and changeup, Webster one-hit the University of Maine 70 years ago this month, allowing only two fly-ball outs and striking out eight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1919\" height=\"1279\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/04\/G2-151119_glove-Archives_5259.jpg\" alt=\"Items from the Edmund S. Edmund Muskie &#8217;36, received as gifts baseballs signed by players on the three Major League baseball teams then in New York City: the New York Giants, the New York Yankees, and the Brooklyn Dodgers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the Dodger baseball, featuring Hall of Famer&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/robinja02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jackie Robinson<\/a>\u2019s signature at top followed by those of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/roebued01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ed Roebuck<\/a>, relief pitcher;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/labincl01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clem Labine<\/a>, relief pitcher;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nelsoro01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rocky Nelson<\/a>, first base;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nealch01.shtml\">Charlie Neal<\/a>, second base;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/walkeru01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rube Walker<\/a>, catcher; and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/amorosa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sandy Amoros<\/a>, left fielder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A year later, the Dodgers and Giants would both announce their moves to Los Angeles and San Francisco, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1919\" height=\"1279\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/04\/170104_Archives_0084-1.jpg\" alt=\"Objects in the College Archives, Ladd Library, with James &quot;Pat&quot; Webber, Information &amp; Library Services, Director of Archives and Special Collections, Muskie Archives. Research suggests it might be a Bates victory over the University of Maine from 1936.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pitcher&#8217;s three-quarter arm slot \u2014 not overhand, not sidearm, but in between \u2014 appears to be &#8220;natural, loose, and easy,&#8221; says Bates head coach Jon Martin. &#8220;And I would predict this type of pitcher could master a two-seam fastball and\/or sinker.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bates hitter looks to have a great &#8220;two-strike approach,&#8221; meaning he&#8217;s trying to make contact to score the runner from third base. &#8220;I bet he&#8217;s a clutch hitter,&#8221; Martin says, noting how the batter attacks the outside pitch and drives it to right field. &#8220;I love it. This guy could hit in my lineup any day.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<lite-youtube videoid=\"5okjEC266c4\" params=\"modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0\" playlabel=\"Bates baseball, circa 1936\" title=\"Bates baseball, circa 1936\" >\n\t\t\t<\/lite-youtube>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My Lord<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Harry Lord, who attended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2020\/10\/20\/meet-headstrong-harry-lord-bates-lord-of-the-baseball-diamond\/\">Bates for most of the 1904\u201305 year, playing football and baseball<\/a>, went on to a notable Major League career. (Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The slugger on the team was mustachioed senior left-fielder William Putnam (seated), Class of 1892, who hit a team-leading four home runs, Putnam was 5 feet, 11 1\/2 inches and 165 pounds. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rough and Ready<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lewiston-born <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/carribi02.shtml\">Bill Carrigan was a combative player-manager<\/a> who led the Boston Red Sox to World Series titles in 1915 and again in 1916. In the 1930s, he coached the Bates team. Babe Ruth, when he was with the Sox, called Carrigan his best-ever manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A catcher who earned the nickname &#8220;Rough,&#8221; Carrigan was famous for blocking a runner&#8217;s path to the plate, which often led to spectacular collisions \u2014 and fights.
