Bates quotes from here and there: April 30, 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An occasional roundup of what Bates folks are saying about this and that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thanks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to begin with a thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2014 Vice President for Campus Life Josh McIntosh, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/academic-year-2020-21\/2021\/04\/13\/april-13-in-room-restriction-lifted-in-person-courses-and-co-curricular-programs-may-resume-on-wednesday\/\"><em>acknowledging cooperation by students during their 11 days of in-room restriction<\/em><\/a><em> in early April (with exceptions for outdoor exercise and meals) after unauthorized parties in late March led to a spike in COVID-19 cases. Mitchell offered a way for someone to begin a respectful discussion with another person about how they wish to describe their racial or other identity. Mitchell says that another phrase that Bates students use to begin the conversation is, \u201cHow do you identify?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Back in the Race<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI never thought we would get to race again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2014&nbsp;On the <a href=\"https:\/\/gobatesbobcats.com\/podcasts\/bates-bobcast-episode-225-a-full-slate-of-spring-sports\/238\">Bates Bobcast<\/a>, first varsity eight coxswain Elizabeth Folsom &#8217;21 of San Mateo, Calif., discusses the rowing team getting back on the water for the first time since the Head of the Charles Regatta in October 2019. But then it felt great.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2014 On the <a href=\"https:\/\/gobatesbobcats.com\/podcasts\/bates-bobcast-episode-225-a-full-slate-of-spring-sports\/238\">Bates Bobcast<\/a>, Genesis Paulino &#8217;21 of Lawrence, Mass., describes the rapid adjustment, from feeling distracted by wearing a face mask to feeling the joy of returning to competition, at 2021\u2019s first women&#8217;s track and field meet, on April 24. The field events took place at Bowdoin, while Bates hosted the track events.
