Some are big as billboards, like last spring\u2019s return to an in-person Commencement. And some, like the Den\u2019s return after being closed for 516 days, might whiz by without fanfare \u2014 but feel deeply symbolic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after Evans unlocked the door at 8 a.m., his first customer was a Den regular, 97-year-old Ralph Sylvester \u201850, who drove himself from his home in Auburn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1919\" height=\"1279\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/08\/210817_Den_Opens_8843_TS.webp\" alt=\"Ralph Sylvester '50, age 97, and Alan Kelley of Bates Facility Services renew a morning routine, having breakfast together in the Bobcat Den, which reopened Aug. 17 after being closed since March 20, 2020, due to the pandemic. I bought it after the war from Cloutier\u2019s Garage on Canal Street for $365. That was a beater.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Den staff warmly greeted Sylvester as he ambled in. Indeed, the Den is one of those \u201ceveryone knows your name\u201d places. And where most folks are old enough to get that reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can see a lot of people come through the Den who you may not see on a regular basis on campus,\u201d says Alan Kelley of Bates Facility Services. \u201cIt\u2019s great to see folks and say, &#8216;Hi, how\u2019s it going,&#8217; and get a decent meal to fill your belly to start your day out right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Den was created as part of a 1950 expansion of Chase Hall. (Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then as now, coffee was a big seller. \u201cCoffee sales have necessitated an order for four dozen additional cups,\u201d the<em> Student<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At breakfast and lunch, Den customers today are mostly faculty and staff, plus occasional visitors, perhaps a worker from a Bates construction site or from a nearby hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some sit alone reading the paper or scrolling through their news feed. Others are at tables pushed together for a departmental meal. Jay Burns\/Bates College) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Between meals and in the evening, it\u2019s more of a quiet hangout spot for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sylvester is a World War II veteran, a combat engineer who arrived on Omaha Beach about a week after D-Day, then spent the rest of the war clearing minefields and building bridges for troops heading inexorably toward Germany.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For his first breakfast back in Den, Sylvester had two eggs over easy, with bacon, toast, and home fries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelley soon joined Sylvester at their regular table, close to the entrance, for a renewal of their years-long routine, having breakfast together, sometimes joined by John Rasmussen, energy manager for Facility Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Den is where Ralph and I met and developed our friendship,\u201d said Kelley, who is the mechanical and electrical services manager for Facility Services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd it\u2019s quite a friendship,\u201d said Sylvester, dipping a forkful of home fries into his ketchup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1919\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/08\/0507f0177de059a80123c11ed5ba518b.webp\" alt=\"Circa 1953, the Bobcat Den staff pose for a photograph.
