But halfway through the game, the home team owned a 10\u20130 lead, holding Bates to just three first downs and 23 yards of offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe weren\u2019t playing the way we expected to play in the first half,\u201d said senior quarterback Brendan Costa of Westport, Mass. \u201cWe talked about it at halftime. We came out with a different type of intensity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And how.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<lite-youtube videoid=\"8u1dZkUXu5U\" params=\"modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0\" playlabel=\"Bates football beats Bowdoin as Brendan Costa makes history\" title=\"Bates football beats Bowdoin as Brendan Costa makes history\" >\n\t\t\t<\/lite-youtube>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<figcaption>Video by Aaron Morse\/Bates College<\/figcaption>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A couple minutes into the second half, Costa flashed the talent that\u2019s been re-writing the Bates record books this year, immediately sparking the Bobcat offense with a 57-yard touchdown strike to Christian Olivieri &#8217;22 of Hull, Mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With four seconds left in the game, the good news was that Bates held a 25\u201324 lead. The bad news was that Bowdoin had the ball deep in Bobcat territory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But on fourth down, Bowdoin\u2019s 28-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left, giving the Bobcats a victory in the 123rd meeting between the two rivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;I decided I love my team, I love this program, and I feel like there was this unfinished business.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Had the last couple of years been any kind of normal, Costa would not have been guiding the Bobcat offense this year. As a member of the Class of 2021, he would\u2019ve been off into the world by now, a Bates degree in rhetoric in hand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But after the pandemic canceled the 2020 football season, Costa did what more than a few NESCAC athletes have done: reclaim the final year of their sport by taking a semester off from their studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Costa\u2019s case, he took a leave of absence during the winter 2021 semester, and re-enrolled this fall for his final Bates semester \u2014 and his final season of Bobcat football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was just going to go straight to grad school,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/gobatesbobcats.com\/podcasts\/bates-bobcast-episode-236-fall-sports-in-the-fast-lane\/249\">the Bates Bobcast earlier in the year.<\/a> \u201cBut I decided I love my team, I love this program, and I feel like there was this unfinished business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was one of the best decisions I&#8217;ve made.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1426\" height=\"951\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/11\/2021-08-26_Bates_Sportraits_Burns-103.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-142759\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/11\/2021-08-26_Bates_Sportraits_Burns-103.webp 1426w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/11\/2021-08-26_Bates_Sportraits_Burns-103-400x267.webp 400w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/11\/2021-08-26_Bates_Sportraits_Burns-103-900x600.webp 900w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/11\/2021-08-26_Bates_Sportraits_Burns-103-200x133.webp 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1426px) 100vw, 1426px\" \/><figcaption>Choosing to extend his Bates studies to reclaim his senior year of football &#8220;was one of the best decisions I&#8217;ve made,&#8221; said Brendan Costa of Westport, Mass. (Brewster Burns for Bates College)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s hard to pick up where you leave off, especially when the leaving off was two years ago. To help make up for lost time, Costa made an effort over the summer to visit and connect with his receivers, even if they lived more than 3,000 miles away, in the case of Jackson Hayes \u201822 of San Marino Calif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hayes-Costa connection was a huge vs. Bowdoin, as the pair hooked up for three completions, two of them for touchdowns. \u201cIt was awesome \u2014 his coming out to California to visit over the summer, and finally getting to connect during a game,\u201d Hayes said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bowdoin game saw Costa break the 44-year-old record for passing yards in one year, <a href=\"https:\/\/gobatesbobcats.com\/podcasts\/bates-bobcast-episode-244-footballs-dramatic-win-under-the-lights-at-bowdoin\/257\">previously held by Hugo Colasante \u201878<\/a>. Costa finished the game atop the charts with 1,680 yards this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of great quarterbacks that have come through here.
