{"id":143582,"date":"2021-12-17T11:47:59","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T16:47:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=143582"},"modified":"2022-01-03T09:50:56","modified_gmt":"2022-01-03T14:50:56","slug":"bates-photographers-favorite-images-of-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2021\/12\/17\/bates-photographers-favorite-images-of-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Bates photographers\u2019 favorite images of 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the joys of this end-of-the-year list \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/tag\/photographers-favorites\/\">a tradition now in its eighth year <\/a>\u2014 lies in reconsidering what favorite means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, Phyllis Graber Jensen, director of photography and video for the Bates Communications Office, accompanied biology students on a rainy-day trip to Wolfe\u2019s Neck Farm for what turned out to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2021\/06\/08\/bates-biology-research-bovine-methane-greenhouse-gas\/\">muddy, mucky, feces-filled assignment<\/a>. But you\u2019ll see one of those images in Phyllis\u2019 favorite images of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, multimedia producer Theophil Syslo came back from a new student orientation exercise in August talking about the dramatic number of bugs interfering with his video production. It sounded awful, like a Hitchcock movie. But that clip made Theo\u2019s year-end list of his favorite behind-the-scenes video clips. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For our photographers, \u201cfavorite\u201d examples of their work<strong> <\/strong>can mean a lot of things. You\u2019ll see technical expertise here, joyful glimpses of behind-the-scenes action that capture Bates students and their commitment to their work, their sport, or their lives as scholars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But maybe more than anything, you\u2019ll see the images that captured an unforgettable experience. That seems very in keeping with the entirety of 2021, a year that made a very deep impression.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t Despair<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Phyllis Graber Jensen says<\/em>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OK, technically, I <em>made<\/em> (photographers like to use this verb to signify agency) this picture in 2020 (8:42 p.m. on New Year\u2019s Eve, to be exact). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But physically and mentally, I had already moved onto and into 2021. Mid-pandemic and without celebratory plans, my husband awaited me in a warm home as I tooled around a frigid Main Street in Lewiston, looking for&#8230;what? Something to signify the end of a, shall we say, troubling year? Reflecting on the photograph in <em>Bates Magazine<\/em>, I wrote: \u201cFinding hope allowed me to sidestep the hurdles of cynicism and despair; abandoning hopelessness vaulted me into the land of common cause.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in hindsight, maybe it was too much color, too much light; what filmmaker Michael Moore calls \u201chopeium.\u201d At the end of another year, I need to remind myself that hope is an essential I can\u2019t afford to live without.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Shadows Know<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\"><em>Theophil Syslo says:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> This clip shows three Bates friends \u2014 and their shadows \u2014 futzing around during a break in a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2021\/06\/10\/video-for-erick-gredonia-21-dance-creates-the-best-version-of-myself\/\"> rehearsal last May for a senior thesis dance choreographed<\/a> by Erick Gredonia \u201921.<em> <\/em>I like how simple, candid, and human they are. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe I also like that it\u2019s exactly what I would be doing in that position. Erick performed in his dance, but he\u2019s not seen here \u2014 he was elsewhere in Schaeffer Theatre, working with the stage crew on sound and light positioning. If \u2018nothing\u2019 is happening, is it a moment? That\u2019s what I was pondering as I shot some frames as a new pitcher warmed up during a softball game between Bates and visiting Tufts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, what you\u2019re seeing is not a \u201creal\u201d pitch. In fact, you might say that the pitches tossed during a pitching change are one of the most \u201cnon-moment\u201d moments in all of sports. No other sport interrupts their games the way a pitching change does. And I also thought, \u201cGreat! Nakum, who had lived in Adams Hall for three of her four years at Bates with her closest friends \u2014 \u201camazing and intelligent women of color\u201d \u2014 found comfort in the daily view from her Puddle-side room. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So it was fitting to bind her senior thesis, examining the experiences of women of color college students in academia, in a setting that \u201cwitnessed my evolution as a student and a woman of color and influenced the way I framed my thesis.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That her thesis was accepted for presentation at a national psychology conference added another reason to celebrate. Nakum\u2019s joyful moment felt liberating, even just to witness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full credit-only\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1919\" height=\"1279\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/12\/210525_Thesis_Binding_Lake_Andrews_0309A.webp\" alt=\"Riya Nakum \u00ed21 lived in Adams Hall for three of her four years, \u00ecwith my closest friends, amazing and intelligent women of color.\u00ee\n\nFrom her Puddle-side room, Lake Andrews was a daily comforting sight. \u00ecI spent most of my time, energy, laughs, and tears at the Puddle,\u00ee she says. So it was fitting to bind her senior thesis at the beloved place that has \u00ecwitnessed my evolution as a student and a woman of color and influenced the way I framed my thesis and the experiences I wrote about.\u00ee\n\nNakum\u00eds psychology thesis is titled, &quot;From Oppression to Liberation with Resilience and Hope: The Experiences of Women of Color College Students in Academia.\u00ee \u00ecLittle research has focused on recognizing and amplifying the voices of strengths, hope, and resilience amongst women of color at predominantly white institutions,\u00ee explains Nakum, who is from Irvington, N.Y.\n\nHer thesis, recently accepted for presentation at a national psychology conference, recasts the voices of women of color at PWIs as \u00ecresisting all forms of societal oppression,\u00ee including gendered racism, racialized sexism, and societal barriers.\n\nHer adviser is Assistant Professor of Psychology Yunkyoung \u00ecYun\u00ee Garrison. \u00ecShe has been an amazing supporter and role model for me personally and academically. Deon\u2019s finger snap at the end seals the deal for me. During the morning <strong>c<\/strong>eremony on May 27, a photograph of honorary degree recipient Rhiannon Giddens was displayed on a large monitor as her degree citation was read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> I\u2019m not sure why this image feels compelling to me. Maybe it\u2019s not just one thing. The pop of color, or maybe it\u2019s the exposure, or layering within the frame? Or could it be the compression from using a long lens? Or the frame within the frame? Maybe it&#8217;s because musician Giddens is maskless, or maybe the curl of her fingers? But I do know that when you capture the moment when a player steps on her opponent&#8217;s hand while they\u2019re trying to pick up their stick, it\u2019s going to make the short list for Photographers\u2019 Favorites. Beyond feeling the frame\u2019s \u201cOuch!\u201d I enjoy the repetitiveness in the use of triangles within the frame. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When photographing ball sports, you tend to need three things: two faces and a ball. Face: check! Ball: check! Face: ouch! It\u2019s one of those early-morning scenarios when almost no one else is around, and I can focus on isolating certain elements however I like. Nobody else\u2019s expectations come into play. I rarely see the world this way; I\u2019m too easily distracted. It\u2019s a pity. One, the subject can sometimes overfill the frame. Second, the lens creates a shallow depth of field, so even with autofocus, it\u2019s not guaranteed that you\u2019ll always achieve tack-sharp images. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was photographing the game from the North end zone, near the Village. Generally, it\u2019s easier to shoot action that\u2019s going across your field of view. When a player is coming right at you, it\u2019s harder because the focus keeps changing. First, an explanation of what you\u2019re seeing: exhaust stacks on the roof of Carnegie Science Hall reflected in the windows of the Beacon, a glass curtain wall on the new Bonney Science Center, right across Campus Avenue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon looking up, my eyes opened wide at the scene\u2019s distorted color, pattern, and sculptural shapes. And this photo shows why. Nicely done! You might wonder why I set the \u201cstudio\u201d up in a less-than-perfect way. That\u2019s because the Trashion Show is such an authentic presentation of Bates student life, and that felt more in line with the event\u2019s aesthetic. On Aug. 26, which was Opening Day for the Class of 2025, it was bugs, from a hatch around campus of some kind of flying insect. While interviewing students who are Junior Advisors and Residence Coordinators, the bugs were all around, including pit stops on the camera lens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the students were troupers, giving me great quotes about supporting new students while bugs were in their faces. Within moments of my inspection, Lauren Nudi&nbsp; \u201923 of Wayzata, Minn., and roommate Courtney Tally \u201923 of Hanover, N.H., appeared at the window, eager to tell me more. This clip shows Africana major Joshua Redd \u201921 and Mayra Gomes Spencer \u201922 binding Josh\u2019s&nbsp; thesis, an analysis of Black students&#8217; experiences in New York City charter schools. I was working with Josh on a video profile, but alas, the year concluded before we could finish. It\u2019s a series of stylized black-and-white portraits paired with first-person survivor testimony, both painful and celebratory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One photograph in it, a portrait of a husband and wife, has stuck with me for decades, and I\u2019ve always wanted to photograph two individuals in a similar way. Copy and steal, they call it. It\u2019s a posture that implies a journey as well as proximity. My opportunity arose in February when I was asked to photograph Ed Walker \u201902 and his daughter, Bates senior Tiauna Divine Walker for a <em>Bates Magazine<\/em> feature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COVID-19 restrictions meant that the photography had to be done outdoors. No problem: the Bates Windsor chairs on Alumni Walk and the father-daughter connection warmed up the whole scene. Bates needed those points, so I was following him with my lens. Then Stephen Ward \u201923 of Boston stepped into the frame. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In full view of the entire crowd, but in clearly a private moment, their somber closeness intrigued me. A purple flower? I didn\u2019t really know any of the details as I used a macro lens with an extension tube to photograph this moment outside Pettengill Hall. Captioned vaguely for Instagram, the picture yielded several comments identifying both the butterfly, a Painted Lady, and its purple landing pad (Echinacea purpurea, aka purple coneflower). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was hoping for a nice closeup of something, anything really. And butterflies were in full supply on the first of August as I prowled campus looking for the short view in environmental details. Changing your perspective with a closeup lens yields particular delights. In this case, those brown orbs on the butterfly\u2019s wing make me almost feel as if I\u2019m looking at an owl. Leah Puro, a staff member at Wolfe\u2019s Neck Center in Freeport, displays her hand (gloved, thankfully) in the facility\u2019s organic dairy barn, where she had pulled a sample of cow excrement from a test subject. She\u2019d just handed off the specimen to a group of Bates students enrolled in the immersive biology course \u201cBiological Research Experience: Molecules to Ecosystems,\u201d when she held her hand up for the camera. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research topic was lofty, examining how a seaweed supplement might decrease the high levels of methane cows burp out, but it involved getting messy. One thing I noticed while editing the photograph: Her mask mirrored her gloves in a colorful way. Therein lies the beauty of the moment.
