{"id":144122,"date":"2022-02-02T13:13:17","date_gmt":"2022-02-02T18:13:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=144122"},"modified":"2022-04-04T09:49:27","modified_gmt":"2022-04-04T13:49:27","slug":"nescac-snow-poll-24-inches-is-a-jumbo-blizzard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2022\/02\/02\/nescac-snow-poll-24-inches-is-a-jumbo-blizzard\/","title":{"rendered":"NESCAC Snow Poll: 24 inches is a Jumbo-sized blizzard"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For a word that&#8217;s bandied about so gleefully by weather buffs, &#8220;blizzard&#8221; sure carries a lot of uncertainty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know this: It doesn&#8217;t even need to snow for a blizzard to occur? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The snow can be falling <em>or<\/em> merely blowing. Either way, visibility must be reduced below a quarter mile, and the wind must &#8220;frequently&#8221; gust to 35mph or more. (The National Weather Service office in Norton, Mass., issued a nifty and <a href=\"https:\/\/nwschat.weather.gov\/p.php?pid=202201311850-KBOX-NOUS41-PNSBOX\">comprehensive statement about where in its forecast area the storm was a blizzard<\/a>.) Media reports suggest that blizzard conditions were met <meta charset=\"utf-8\">here in Maine, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And did you know this: While the word &#8220;blizzard&#8221; has been around since the 1800s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/blizzard\">no one is sure of its origin<\/a>. Its first meaning, early in the 1800s, was something \u2014 not necessarily snow \u2014 delivered fiercely, like a punch, gunshot, or argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> The book <em>Slang and Its Analogues<\/em>&nbsp;in 1890 gave this example of that early usage: &#8220;If a magistrate lectured a litigant severely he gave him a <em>blizzard<\/em>.&#8221; The word took on its current meaning, of a major snowstorm, later in the 1800s.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<lite-youtube videoid=\"vbygp4kFUbI\" params=\"modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0\" playlabel=\"Wind-whipped snow\" title=\"Wind-whipped snow\" >\n\t\t\t<\/lite-youtube>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<figcaption>High winds whip down a power line near Brunswick during the Jan. 29 storm, creating low visibility, aka blizzard conditions.
