{"id":144990,"date":"2022-03-17T13:23:31","date_gmt":"2022-03-17T17:23:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=144990"},"modified":"2022-03-22T10:18:37","modified_gmt":"2022-03-22T14:18:37","slug":"slideshow-not-your-traditional-antigone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2022\/03\/17\/slideshow-not-your-traditional-antigone\/","title":{"rendered":"Slideshow: Not your traditional &#8216;Antigone&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&#8220;What happens when we are deprived of the ability to grieve?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s the question the cast and crew of <em>Antigonick<\/em>, now in a sold-out run at Schaeffer Theatre, asked in January as they set out to stage their adaptation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2012\/jun\/08\/antigonick-anne-carson-review\">poet Anne Carson&#8217;s innovative translation<\/a> of Sophocles&#8217; play <em>Antigone<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In case you need a brief refresher of Sophocles and Greek mythology, <strong>Antigone<\/strong>, the daughter of&nbsp;Oedipus, has been deprived of the ability to grieve. She&#8217;s trying to secure a decent burial for her brother <strong>Polyneikes<\/strong>; he was killed by their other brother, <strong>Eteokles<\/strong>, when the pair fought on opposite sides of the the war of the&nbsp;Seven against Thebes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their uncle is <strong>Kreon<\/strong>, whose son&nbsp;<strong>Haimon<\/strong> is in love with Antigone; she&#8217;s determined to bury Polyneikes&#8217; body, but in doing so, is condemned to death by Kreon because he considers Polyneikes traitorous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to making meta-references and pulling back the curtain on more silent characters, Carson&#8217;s adaptation adds the character of <strong>Nick,<\/strong> who silently measures things throughout the play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1278\" height=\"1919\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2022\/03\/220316_Antigonick_Dress_Rehearsal_0022.jpg\" alt=\"Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College\" class=\"wp-image-144988\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2022\/03\/220316_Antigonick_Dress_Rehearsal_0022.jpg 1278w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2022\/03\/220316_Antigonick_Dress_Rehearsal_0022-200x300.webp 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2022\/03\/220316_Antigonick_Dress_Rehearsal_0022-599x900.webp 599w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2022\/03\/220316_Antigonick_Dress_Rehearsal_0022-1023x1536.webp 1023w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2022\/03\/220316_Antigonick_Dress_Rehearsal_0022-133x200.webp 133w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2022\/03\/220316_Antigonick_Dress_Rehearsal_0022-418x628.jpg 418w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1278px) 100vw, 1278px\" \/><figcaption>Assistant Professor of Theater Tim Dugan directs Antigonick. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Staging <em>Antigonick<\/em> at Bates has offered an &#8220;idyllic opportunity&#8221; to dig deep into Anne Carson&#8217;s text, says director and Assistant Professor of Theater Tim Dugan, and to devise theatrical elements to support the story through puppetry and shadow theater. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Nick is most likely the loudest mute character to be portrayed on stage,&#8221; says Nespole. &#8220;Carson\u2019s take on this classic offers&#8230; an invitation to explore themes of female autonomy, voice, and how to be loud while in a position of silence.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It represents when Antigone starts to grapple with the reception and history of the play and her characterizations, and that Nick is part of her presence \u2014 he&#8217;s the one who measures her self-measuring.
