Bates Dance Festival&#8217;s full return arrives in style"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Bates Dance Festival is turning 40 this summer, and in fitting fashion, plans for the anniversary celebration will pull together the many elements that have made this renowned festival endure for four decades: world class dancers, enthusiastic students, and a celebration of dedicated individuals who have made the festival a uniquely Bates event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There will be legendary artists, from Reggie Wilson and his Fist &amp; Heel Performance Group to David Dorfman Dance. \u201cIt\u2019s a confluence of astounding talent,\u201d says BDF Director Shoshona Currier.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-highlight highlight-box\">\n<p><strong>For more information<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visiting or vacationing in Maine this summer? Take in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.batesdancefestival.org\/performances\/\">Bates Dance Festival performance<\/a>, or one of the events of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.batesdancefestival.org\/40th-anniversary-celebration-weekend\/\">three-day 40th Anniversary Celebration<\/a>, July 29\u201331.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<p>After being canceled in 2020, the festival returned in 2021 \u2014 but on a smaller scale. (Photograph Christopher Duggan)<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Capping the festival\u2019s 40th anniversary season is a three-day celebration, July 29\u201331, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.batesdancefestival.org\/bdfete\/\">the BDF\u00eate, a party<\/a> on the Olin Arts Center terrace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2022\/06\/14\/bates-celebrates-12-retiring-professors-who-exemplify-persistence-and-care-grace-and-humility\/#dilley\">honoring Carol Dilley, who retires from the Bates dance faculty this year.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dilley, who joined Bates in 2003, led the expansion of dance within the curriculum, culminating in dance being made a major in 2011. Along the way, Dilley integrated the festival into the Bates dance curriculum in meaningful ways. \u201cCarol works closely with the festival to chart a course for those students that enhances the learning they receive during the academic year,\u201d Currier says. \u00a0This year, about a half-dozen Bates students will earn academic credit for assisting with the dance festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In this video by Ariel Abonizio \u201820, Bates dance students talk about their experience with the Bates Dance Festival. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<lite-vimeo videoid=\"356936505\" autoload><\/lite-vimeo>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The BDF\u00eate on July 29 for Dilley will immediately be followed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.batesdancefestival.org\/rennie-harris-puremovement\/\">performance at Schaeffer Theatre of <em>Rome &amp; Jewels<\/em><\/a>, a work by Rennie Harris and Puremovement that <em>Dance Magazine<\/em> calls \u201cseminal\u201d and which itself is enjoying an anniversary, its 30th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to celebrations, this year\u2019s festival includes\u00a0a memorial of sorts for another festival stalwart. Courtesy Bates Dance Festival)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One festival artist this year, Miguel Gutierrez, shifted gears in response to the challenges of remounting a show two years after it was originally scheduled to appear at the festival. He\u2019ll be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.batesdancefestival.org\/miguel-gutierrez-i-as-another\/\">performing a new work, <em>I as another<\/em>, an intimate duet<\/a> with Laila Franklin, \u201cmostly inspired by Willie Colon, Stevie Nicks, and the all consuming sadness that envelops everything.\u201d Gutierrez met Franklin at the festival in 2021, when she took part in the training program. The work will be performed on Aug. 3 and Aug. 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another group whose BDF appearance was derailed by the pandemic is Reggie Wilson\u2019s Fist &amp; Heel Performance Group. The Brooklyn-based dance company will perform in two campus spaces, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.batesdancefestival.org\/fist-heel\/\">Lake Andrews on July 11<\/a> and in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.batesdancefestival.org\/fist-heel\/\">Schaeffer Theatre on July 15 and 17<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re so excited to be able to make good on these previous commitments,\u201d Currier said. \u201cAnd in the case of Reggie Wilson, to actually expand upon it, thanks to our partnership with Indigo Arts Alliance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2022\/02\/03\/bates-dance-festival-receives-two-grants-totally-190000-from-the-national-endowment-for-the-arts\/\">as well as significant relief grants<\/a>. We\u2019re thrilled to involve community members in this project, as well as our Young Dancers.
