King and the Drifters in 1960.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A selection of magic Bates moments of 2022 comprise this end-of-the-year photography list \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/tag\/photographers-favorites\/\">a tradition now in its ninth year <\/a>\u2014 which shares some of our photographers&#8217; favorite images, both stills and video, of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of these images represent a fraction of a moment. The shutter on Phyllis Graber Jensen\u2019s Canon EOS-1D X Mark II clicked open for just 1\/8000th of a second to freeze the moment of sports ecstasy for field hockey player Paige Cote \u201924.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, Theophil Syslo had his Canon 5D Mark IV running for 12 minutes and 28 seconds as he wound his way through the Commencement procession, capturing a historic academic moment (and a spot of spontaneous faculty applause for a colleague) on video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not surprising, \u201cmoment\u201d comes from the Latin, specifically the word <em>momentum<\/em>, meaning \u201cmotion\u201d or \u201ca short time,\u201d according to the highly regarded Online Etymology Dictionary, which advises users that a \u201cmoment\u201d has duration, while an \u201cinstant\u201d does not. Whatever the shutter speed these Bates moments that photographers captured and shared in 2022 have the power to endure. As the song goes, <em>Forever &#8217;til the end of time. Magic.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Back for More<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phyllis Graber Jensen explains<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the short walk home at the end of the day on Friday, March 18, I glanced at my phone. A student, Sanika Shah \u201922, had sent me a note. Apologizing for the late notice, she said that a \u201cHoli on the Quad\u201d celebration would begin at 4:30. Mentally, I had just about crossed the threshold from work to weekend. But since I straddled that line and lived close to campus (an occupational hazard), I decided to go back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have photographed this Hindu celebration before, and it\u2019s never less than full-blown bountiful joy. Two years of COVID curtailed the usual in-person gatherings, making this one especially joyous. This picture of Miranda Eisenman \u201925, Phil Han \u201925, Krishna Kakani \u201925, and Hark Lally \u201922 is one of my favorites.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mom Knows Best<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Theo Syslo explains:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put me outside capturing video of students in the field, and I\u2019m content. Put me on the water, and I\u2019m happy as a clam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fall 2021, I traveled to the coast, to the University of Maine\u2019s Darling Marine Center on the Damariscotta River, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NUbRhx0_kB8\">for a video profile<\/a> of Essie Martin &#8217;22. This brief clip is my greeting Martin on the dock and commenting on her hat.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<lite-youtube videoid=\"BBPYV9dFp4o\" params=\"modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0\" playlabel=\"Essie Martin &#039;22 | 2022 Moments\" title=\"Essie Martin &#039;22 | 2022 Moments\" >\n\t\t\t<\/lite-youtube>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I first photographed Martin in 2018 during the annual Trashion Show. She has accomplished amazing things since then, including earning a highly competitive Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Throughout it all, she\u2019s been genuine, enthusiastic, and determined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approaching the dock that day, I saw that she was wearing a pinkish cap. &#8220;Oh no,&#8221; I thought. Hats create notoriously bad shadows on the face. And, I thought, wouldn\u2019t Bates garnet look better against the greens and blues of the ocean, trees, and sky? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To my delight, the pink hat was actually a faded Bates geology cap, one of Martin\u2019s two majors (biology being the other), and it looked great on the water that morning. Shout out to Essie\u2019s mom for the great advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flying Friends<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phyllis Graber Jensen explains<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I enjoy various elements in this photograph of Nathan Huynh &#8217;23 (left) of San Diego and Jack Cantor &#8217;23 of Chevy Chase, Md., on a longboard. There\u2019s the cacophony of October colors, the feeling of the sun\u2019s warmth, and the closeness of their friendship. It\u2019s usually hit or miss. In this case, I can tick off all the boxes for a successful image. But in the end, the sweetest ingredient is their collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Michael&#8217;s March<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Theo Syslo explains:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parts of this clip were used in a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Uv6sSL0Fc74\">highlight reel for Commencement 2022<\/a>. One highlight was historic: Phillips Professor of Economics Michael Murray&#8217;s final Commencement leading the academic procession as the mace bearer, an honor accorded the senior member of the faculty. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<lite-youtube videoid=\"-T1IuB5Jke8\" params=\"modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0\" playlabel=\"Michael&#039;s March | 2022 Moments\" title=\"Michael&#039;s March | 2022 Moments\" >\n\t\t\t<\/lite-youtube>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the clip, you can see how I\u2019m moving here and there, tracking the procession, keeping my eye on the prize (and getting a few hellos from Bates colleagues). Then, around the 44-second mark, Michael\u2019s colleagues break into spontaneous applause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> It\u2019s fun to capture a historic moment like that. When I watch this clip, I think, \u201cversatility.\u201d And see that vignetting at lower-left in the frame? That\u2019s an oops moment, a half-attached lens hood. I err; therefore, I am human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Web Design<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phyllis Graber Jensen explains<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After parking my car behind Lane Hall one September morning, I noticed a spider web on foliage along Lake Andrews. The rapidly fading morning fog had enveloped the web, backlit by the rising sun. Nice. Posting the image on Instagram, I included a quote attributed to Turkish playwright Mehmet Murat ildan. \u201cSometimes when you lose your way in the fog, you end up in a beautiful place! Don\u2019t be afraid of getting lost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Up and Away<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Theo Syslo explains<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This unedited clip is from a video telling about the<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/eQTl5WvM20s\"> student \u201ctakeover\u201d of nearby Lost Valley ski area<\/a> to kick off Winter Carnival last February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a blast \u2014 I was running up and down the slopes capturing video. I worked this scene for a couple minutes (couldn\u2019t stay still too long for fear of turning into a popsicle). It worked and made me happy. And after a great shoot, you get to go back and have a great edit!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not Forgotten<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phyllis Graber Jensen explains<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all have our rituals. And if one of yours is to stop by a cemetery to visit the grave of a loved one, you might identify, as I did, with Victoria Wyeth \u201901, seen kissing the tombstone of grandparents Andrew and Betsy Wyeth, in Cushing, Maine, this October. The multitalented Miguel Angel Pacheco \u201924 of Caracas, Venezuela, is a ubiquitous campus presence, one day feeding the scrum during a Bates rugby match, the next parading around Gray Athletic Building on stilts modeling an outfit for the Trashion Show. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1919\" height=\"1278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2022\/10\/TMB_220921_United_World_College_Day_0146.webp\" alt=\"\u201cPeace begins with us.\u201dThat was the theme of this year\u2019s United World College Day that a group of Davis United World Scholars at Bates celebrated by gathering with staff from the Center for Global Education in front of Roger Williams Hall. UWC Day is the annual global celebration of the UWC mission and values, which takes place on Sept. 21 every year, to coincide with the UN International Day of Peace. Each year, UWC Day is celebrated by thousands of people worldwide, including students and staff at UWC schools and colleges, national committees, UWC alumni and friends. Associate Dean for International Student Programs James Reese likes to recognize the day at Bates with a photograph and gathering.The spirit of friendship was in the air as students broke up from their large group to exchange hugs and words with classmates. In my interview with Pott, he spoke so warmly about the people he works with, and I think that is driven home with this scene of this dressing room pep talk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/xQgOmt5OwOA\">In the final produced piece<\/a>, you don\u2019t hear Noah\u2019s words in the group huddle, but visually you know he\u2019s endeared himself to the team, and he is thankful to them. My last assignment was covering back-to-back discussions featuring actor and filmmaker John Turturro and the actor, film producer, and stage director John Shea \u201970. But instead I went with this one, in which Turturro pretends to be acting in a big-budget actioner, reacting to the unseen monster or monsters that would be added to the film later, thanks to the wonders of CGI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He described that type of acting as a \u201csketch\u201d compared to more intensive and creative work that, like a painter, allows him to create fuller works of art. His electric gesture and expression made my day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Post Goal<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phyllis Graber Jensen explains<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to photographing field hockey, I operate on instinct. That\u2019s a nice way of saying I am not always sure what\u2019s happening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So at first, I wasn\u2019t entirely sure who had scored the goal that Paige Cote \u201924 of Auburn, Maine, is jumping for joy about. But I do understand jubilation, a favorite word of newspaper photographers in my day, when I see it. One game had students using chopsticks to pick up and drop as many candy Skittles as they could into a take-out box before time runs out. For some reason, it reminded me of the children\u2019s game Hungry Hungry Hippos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I like the photo because it\u2019s two-dimensional.&nbsp;Graphic, harmonious, yet chaotic. A photographer works all the angles, and in this case I would call this image a detail photo. The strolling students filled the bill for composition and companionship. It takes a village. Interior lights burning through the window and a solitary walker dwarfed by Olin\u2019s brickwork \u2014 all of it reflected in the water, all punctuated by fall colors \u2014 creates a memorable view, and photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rising in the Poles<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Theo Syslo explains:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This photograph of pole vaulter Liam Evans \u201922, taken during the Maine State Classic on April 23 using a 300mm lens, really struck a chord. In the bend in the pole captured in a precise moment, I see chaos and order working harmoniously together to accomplish a single goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s pretty cool what we can do with cameras, not just today but even yesterday. The tension that I experienced in the morning, the feeling of being responsible for capturing moments that do justice to the day, begins to disintegrate. The ceremony is over.
