Janet Mills beginning in 2019, Shah became something of a folk hero for leading Maine\u2019s pandemic response, both in Maine and more broadly. Shah is also credited with rebuilding Maine\u2019s overall public health infrastructure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As COVID-19 barreled into the state in 2020 and throughout the pandemic, Shah used his \u201cpowerful intellect and profound humanity\u201d to become Maine\u2019s \u201ccalm and sure-footed guide through uncharted territory\u201d, said Dean of the Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs Malcolm Hill in delivering the citation for Shah\u2019s honorary degree.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<lite-youtube videoid=\"_UpiV9VfrJ8\" params=\"modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0\" playlabel=\"Commencement Address | Nirav D. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The admiration between Maine and Shah was mutual. \u201cMy heart will remain in Maine,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PzhMD2c7G8Y\">he said in his video resignation announcement<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ll still be working for all of you \u2014 I\u2019m just adding 330 million people to the mix. I am so grateful to everyone in Maine for your kindness and support.
