The public is welcome to attend free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>Brown will discuss Mary Shelley&#8217;s famous horror novel <em>Frankenstein<\/em>, first published in 1818. Drawing upon a forthcoming book on Gothic fiction, Brown will focus particularly on the idea of childhood.<\/p>\n<p>Brown&#8217;s books include <em>The Shape of German Romanticism<\/em> (Cornell University Press, 1979), <em>Preromanticism<\/em> (Stanford University Press, 1991) and <em>Turning Points: Essays in the History of Cultural Expressions<\/em> (Stanford University Press, 1997). He has edited Modern Language Quarterly since 1990.<\/p>\n<p>Brown&#8217;s talk is sponsored by the Department of English at Bates.
