Well before the first pass, set, and hit drill of the new Bates volleyball season, this year\u2019s Bobcat team gathered for some teamwork, off the court. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before each season, varsity teams spend an hour or so for team and individual marketing photos, known as \u201csportraits.\u201d And they get to have some fun along the way, brainstorming poses and cheering on one another.<\/p>\n\n\n

For new Bates players, the photo sessions are a low-stress way to get to know teammates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a super-fun and lighthearted bonding experience,\u201d said Eden Lorin \u201827 of Piedmont, Calif. \u201cIt was a good way to get to know everyone. It really made me feel like I was officially part of the team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, the fun got a boost from McKenzie Barker, a little girl from nearby Norway, Maine, who is part of the team through the program Team Impact<\/a>. \u201cHaving \u2019Kenzie join us for sportraits this year was so much fun,\u201d said Amanda Power \u201826 of Scottsdale, Ariz. \u201cShe brings such a sassy vibe to the team.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As players talk about the photo sessions, they also take the long view, knowing that long after their last match in Alumni Gym, the photos will deliver happy and vivid memories of times at Bates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really cool that I get to look back on my experience as a college athlete because the time goes by so quickly,\u201d says Kate Hansen \u201925 of Menlo Park, Calif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bobcats like to bring props to the photo shoots, including flags of their home states and nations, provided by head coach Emily Hayes and her staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing surprised with our state flags was really great,\u201d said Alma Mackic \u201824 of Lake Forest, Ill. \u201cI loved the idea of showcasing the fact that even though many of us are from different places, with different experiences, and different backgrounds, we are all united through Bates volleyball.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nine states, including Barker\u2019s Maine, and the nation of Canada are represented on this year\u2019s volleyball team. Emma Patard \u201926 is from Outremont, Quebec. \u201cBeing able to represent my flag in the U.S. is really meaningful,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe get to see where everyone is from,\u201d says Hansen. \u201cAt home, I\u2019m surrounded by people who come from the same community. But on our team so many different people from different backgrounds makes for an interesting dynamic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
