\u201cSmooth like butter, like a criminal undercover,\u201d sings Ellie Asada \u201826 of Honolulu during a recent practice when the volleyball libero, the team\u2019s defensive specialist, was mic\u2019d up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s no accident that Asada serves as the team\u2019s libero, a position that requires good communication and high energy to be successful. <\/p>\n\n\n

Along with busting out some dance moves and singing a few K-pop songs \u2014 like \u201cButter\u201d by the boy band BTS \u2014 Asada has a knack for uplifting her teammates and keeping the practice environment exciting and upbeat for everyone involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wireless microphone attached to her practice shirt captures all of Asada\u2019s quips and spirit in real time, sending them to a receiver attached to a video camera handled by Aaron Morse, associate athletic communications director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asada keeps the energy high on and off the court, and sets goals for herself before each practice. This particular practice, Asada wrote two reminders to herself on the team\u2019s white board: to \u201cstay wide\u201d (a backrow player\u2019s wide-footed stance) and \u201ccommunicate.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And communicate she does.
