The Bates tradition dates back close to 50 years, wrote Cebula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cebula noted that \u201cLewiston is a city rich with French Canadian heritage and influence. Plenty of Bates staffers who grew up in the area were raised with generational meat pie traditions in their own families. The latter provides indispensable context for understanding the legacy of Indigenous art and its sidelining throughout history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bates Trashion Show<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When there\u2019s a guy on stilts who\u2019s encased in cardboard, it must be the Bates College Trashion Show \u2014 <em>207<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy feet hurt. But I feel amazing,\u201d said Miguel Angel Pacheco \u201924 of Caracas, Venezuela, when he spoke about the annual Trashion Show with Rob Caldwell, host of the nightly news magazine show <em>207<\/em>, produced by WCSH-TV in Portland.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<lite-youtube videoid=\"OXBEPvz1Ki8\" params=\"modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0\" playlabel=\"When there\u2019s a guy on stilts who\u2019s encased in cardboard, it must be the Bates College &#039;Trashion Show\" title=\"When there\u2019s a guy on stilts who\u2019s encased in cardboard, it must be the Bates College &#039;Trashion Show\" >\n\t\t\t<\/lite-youtube>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<p>High in the air on stilts, Pacheco modeled an outfit by designer Sloan Phillips \u201925 of Evergreen, Colo., who wove together cardboard to create a giant dress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caldwell\u2019s segment highlighted how the annual show is both silly and serious by \u201cshining a light on the importance of sustainability\u201d at Bates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paul Schofield<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Opinion: Liberals shouldn\u2019t scoff at people\u2019s fears of homelessness and crime &nbsp;\u2014 <em>The Washington Post<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>An opinion piece by Assistant Professor of Philosophy Paul Schofield in<em> The Washington Post<\/em> noted that liberals should not scoff when conservative news outlets and politicians appear to exaggerate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2023\/11\/16\/liberals-cities-crime-homelessness-republicans\/\">the homeless situation across America<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schofield writes that \u201cas a political philosopher who studies homelessness and considers himself progressive\u201d he found the homeless problem in San Francisco very real. The duo departed from Nagasaki on Sep. 24 and completed the trip in 32 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"keith\">Amy Keith \u201999<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Florida appeals court upholds congressional map championed by DeSantis \u2014<em> CNN<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Amy Keith \u201899, executive director of Common Cause in Florida, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/01\/politics\/florida-congressional-map-desantis\/index.html\">is helping to lead a court fight <\/a>against congressional redistricting in Florida. Supported by Gov. Ron DeSantis the redistricting is \u201ccontroversial because of the way it dismantled a Black district,\u201d according to Florida Politics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis decision blatantly ignores the will of Florida voters who \u2014 more than a decade ago \u2014&nbsp; demanded Fair Districts that protect representation for communities of color,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lewis Millett \u201949<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Veteran of the Day: U.S. Army veteran Lewis L. Millett \u2014 <em>Aerotech News and Review<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most renowned members of the military Bates alumni community, Lewis Millett \u201949 was named <em>Aerotech News and Review<\/em>\u2019s Veteran of the Day on Nov. 15 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=159060&amp;action=edit\">f<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerotechnews.com\/blog\/2023\/11\/25\/veteran-of-the-day-u-s-army-veteran-lewis-l-millett\/\">or his \u201cunique career in the military,\u201d which spanned 35 years<\/a>, from 1938 to 1973. Millett earned the Medal of Honor and the Silver Star, a Distinguished Service Cross, two Legions of Merit, three Bronze Stars, four Purple Hearts, and three Air Medals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Millett is well-known to military historians for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Feature-Stories\/Story\/Article\/3312940\/medal-of-honor-monday-army-col-lewis-millett-sr\/\">leading the U.S. military\u2019s last major fixed-bayonet charge<\/a>, in Korea in 1951. For much of the war, Sylvester and his comrades built bridges and cleared minefields on the way to Germany. &#8220;We would go ahead of the infantry many times,&#8221; Ralph recalled in a 2019 interview. &#8220;They would say, &#8216;Where are you going?&#8217; &#8216;Oh, up the road a piece.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the war, Sylvester worked for a bank, then a telephone company. After he retired, he and his wife of 70 years, Elaine, had breakfast at Bates almost daily. There, they became friends with Peter Steenstra, head coach of the Bates rowing team, which honored Sylvester earlier this year by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2023\/05\/05\/meet-the-98-year-old-namesake-of-bates-newest-rowing-shell\/\">naming the new rowing shell after Sylvester<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Linda Tilton Gibson \u201987<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Masters in Business: Linda Gibson on quant investing \u2014 <em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Linda Tilton Gibson \u201987, chair and chief executive officer of PGIM Quantitative Solutions LLC, <a href=\"https:\/\/ritholtz.com\/2023\/11\/mib-linda-gibson\/\">talked with Bloomberg about her work leading one of the pioneering firms of quant investing<\/a>, an investment approach that relies on mathematical models and computational techniques in making investment decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the interview, Gibson, a Bates mathematics major, talked about managing people with extremely high IQs, which is typical for \u201cquants.\u201d\u00a0\u201cOur firm has 29 Ph.Ds. Our CIO is literally an ex-rocket scientist who used to work at NASA. These are very, very smart people. In managing them, you definitely have to adapt your style,&#8221; Gibson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that &#8220;we need very smart people, but EQ is equally important as IQ. I lead, direct, and manage and then sort of push them \u2014\u00a0but then just leave them alone.
