{"id":160022,"date":"2024-01-19T11:13:58","date_gmt":"2024-01-19T16:13:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=160022"},"modified":"2024-01-19T16:52:46","modified_gmt":"2024-01-19T21:52:46","slug":"video-making-bread-and-breaking-bread","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2024\/01\/19\/video-making-bread-and-breaking-bread\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: Making bread and breaking bread"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With the Grateful Dead playing in the background, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Tyler Harper led a dozen students through &#8220;Just Flour,&#8221; a step-by-step, hands-on exercise in bread making that included discussions about environmental justice and African American baking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With assistance from Phoebe Stern \u201924 of Nashville, Tenn., Harper encouraged the students \u2014 most of whom came dressed in T-shirts and sweatshirts ready to get dirty \u2014 to pound, knead, and cut the dough on the kitchen counter, which they did with boisterous zeal. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<lite-youtube videoid=\"CgoSyXQcAiQ\" params=\"modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0\" playlabel=\"Just Flour: Bates Students Break Bread on MLK Day 2024\" title=\"Just Flour: Bates Students Break Bread on MLK Day 2024\" >\n\t\t\t<\/lite-youtube>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em>Theophil Syslo\/Bates College<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The four groups worked in a cozy kitchen on the ground floor of Roger Williams Hall, but the classroom buzzed as they joked, shared stories, and laughed together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years ago, Harper taught a Short-Term course that looked at how we think of food and how we imagine the future of food.
