{"id":163872,"date":"2024-06-20T14:56:34","date_gmt":"2024-06-20T18:56:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=163872"},"modified":"2024-06-21T14:20:57","modified_gmt":"2024-06-21T18:20:57","slug":"nescac-heat-poll-june-18-20-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2024\/06\/20\/nescac-heat-poll-june-18-20-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"NESCAC Heat Poll: June 18\u201320, 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>From June 18 to 20, five NESCAC colleges \u2014 six if we round up \u2014 experienced a true heat wave with three consecutive days of 90-degree-plus temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spirit of that definition, we&#8217;ll use the sum total of degrees during the three days for this edition of our occasional ranking of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/tag\/nescac-chill-poll\/\">NESCAC colleges on very cold or very hot days<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lyrically and meteorologically, the late Glenn Frey hinted as what causes a heat wave with his 1984 hit, &#8220;The Heat Is On.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The heat is on,&#8221; he sang, adding, &#8220;the pressure&#8217;s high.&#8221; Exactly, Glenn! And all across the &#8216;Cac, the sinking air underneath our resident high pressure dome got hotter as it became compressed by the high atmospheric pressure close to the Earth&#8217;s surface. It&#8217;s called &#8220;adiabatic warming,&#8221; the same phenomenon that creates warm to hot Santa Ana and Chinooks winds in the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coolest to warmest, here&#8217;s our NESCAC Heat Poll for June 18\u201320. The coolest customers were close to the prevailing south wind coming off the Atlantic Ocean; the hottest is within an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/heatislands\">urban heat island<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For each college, the three-day total of degrees is followed by the high temperature on June 18, 19, and 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator
