{"id":164688,"date":"2024-08-22T15:34:35","date_gmt":"2024-08-22T19:34:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=164688"},"modified":"2026-02-24T19:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T00:10:49","slug":"fun-facts-and-awesome-abilities-of-the-incoming-bates-class-of-2028","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2024\/08\/22\/fun-facts-and-awesome-abilities-of-the-incoming-bates-class-of-2028\/","title":{"rendered":"Fun facts and awesome abilities of the incoming Bates Class of 2028"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>From local heroes to global advocates, with concern for creatures large and small, the incoming Class of 2028&nbsp;brings to Bates a heaping helping of talents, achievements, and successes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2024\/08\/22\/record-breaking-bates-college-class-of-2028-arrives-on-campus-aug-28\/\">Selected from a record 10,029 applications<\/a>, the new class of 491 students comes from 38 U.S. states plus Washington, D.C., and 29 countries outside the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new students are entrepreneurial-minded: Some three dozen have experience founding organizations, clubs, or businesses: a biology tutoring gig, an eatery offering Pakistani comfort food, and a school club teaching students about taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new students have good cents: One is a budding numismatist with expertise in worldwide coins. mountain biking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The humanities and arts are well-represented: music (jazz saxophonist, opera singer, and marching band percussion leader), dance (ballet performer and choreographer), theater (improv), and creative writing (published poets and fiction authors).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, of course, there\u2019s academic curiosity \u2014&nbsp;bioinformatics and environmental chemistry to public health and economics \u2014 and community engagement, whether building homes in Peru, raising funds for earthquake victims, or guiding athletes in adaptive sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new class includes students who have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Served as president of a veterans appreciation club and interned with a veterans group to raise awareness about wounded veterans who do not receive dental benefits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As an animal-rights activist in Russia, helped to create a distinctive dog-socialization program to rehome 900 dogs to six countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helped scientists study Atlantic Ocean tuna to help with conservation efforts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organized a Queer Ball and other events supporting LGBTQ+ students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tutored Afghan girls barred from school by the Taliban.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Volunteered as a driver for Meals on Wheels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completed an Eagle Scout project to design and install a destination trail for people on the visual ability spectrum with interpretive text, braille, and QR audio web interface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Started a program for senior citizens to adopt kittens from local shelters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Founded a lacrosse re-stringing business.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Co-founded two podcasts focused on women in male-dominated career fields.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developed an augmented reality app for children\u2019s books.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Founded a club teaching students about taxes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Run a pet-portrait photography business.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Researched scallop populations and climate change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conducted independent research on Black maternal mortality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Researched the impacts of climate change on coral reefs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interned at a sustainable seaweed farming company.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Worked as wildlife rehabilitator in New York state.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultivated a pollinator garden at school.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Volunteered to categorize fossils for the Field Museum of Science and Natural History from Hell&#8217;s Creek, Montana.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sang lead alto in the Beijing Philharmonic Choir.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Played lead trumpet in the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Staged a photography exhibit depicting life in rural Maine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earned honors from First Lady Jill Biden at the White House for her environmental advocacy, joining other \u201cGirls Leading Change.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Founded and led the town library\u2019s book club.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experienced ice, rock, and mixed climber.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pioneered as the first female wrestling captain at school.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Been the only girl on the school\u2019s varsity football team.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Been a chicken caretaker and member of town\u2019s backyard chicken advisory committee.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earned a grand champion award for their steer at a Future Farmers of America show.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Served as lead builder on an internationally competitive robotics team.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Worked as a barista at a caf\u00e9
