Some athletic moments are hard to relate to, like clearing the bar in a pole vault or nailing a triple axel. Others hit home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other day, Bates golfer Will Phillips \u201925 of Portland, Ore., blasted out from the woods during a practice round at Martindale Country Club in Auburn, the Bates home course for most of the last 100 years.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cAnyone know where it went?\u201d he asks, emerging from the woods. \u201cIn the fairway; you\u2019re fine,\u201d answers teammate Freddie Curtis \u201925 of Harvard, Mass. The ball is indeed in the fairway, but well behind<\/em> Phillips, having ricocheted backward off a tree. \u201cHey, I only said it was in the fairway!\u201d says Curtis, grinning at his joke.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

College golf is a beautiful thing, which this quip-filled mic\u2019d up video captures \u2014 walking a course on a beautiful fall day in Maine with teammates who are also friends, needling and laughing with each other while working to improve one\u2019s game. (Phillips rides a cart this day to help out the videographer.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phillips watches lefthander Charlie Weinman \u201927 of Rye, N.Y., crush a tee shot. Golfers enjoy watching a smooth swing, the way a car enthusiast gazes at a 1957 Chevy Bel Air gliding by. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here, Phillips can\u2019t resist chirping at the sophomore. \u201cI hate watching lefties swing. It just doesn’t look right,\u201d he says, adding with a wry aside: \u201cBut that\u2019s no reflection on their character.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The practice match ends in a tie between the teams, Phillips and Curtis vs. Weinman and Sean Resnick \u201928 of Walpole, Mass. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last zinger belongs to Phillips, who announces “that’s a damn shame” even before an opponent’s putt slides by the hole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The foursome doff caps, shake hands, and says \u201cgood match\u201d all around. Then, they drove back to campus for dinner, studying, and hanging out, the end of another great day to be a Bobcat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
