Parr Doering, chief of the air toxics section of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, will deliver a lecture titled &#8220;Mercury in Maine&#8217;s Environment&#8221; at Bates College on at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 12 in Carnegie Science 204. The public is invited and admission is free. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Doering monitors the atmospheric deposition of hazardous pollutants, including mercury-containing compounds, that have led to fish consumption advisories for Maine&#8217;s inland waters. Her work also involves implementing new federal standards on hazardous air pollutants.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to joining the Maine DEP in 1992, Doering worked on hazardous-waste disposal problems with the Environmental Protection Agency in New York. She earned a bachelor&#8217;s degree in meteorology from Rutgers University in 1981 and a master&#8217;s degree in plant and soil science from the University of Maine in 1986.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ellen E.
