The public is invited to attend free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>Robert L. Thompson, who holds a doctorate in anthropology from the University of Indiana, will give a talk, <em>The Call to Dance: Mandinka Drumming as Social Life in The Gambia<\/em>, as well as perform West African drumming and singing.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Thompson, an accomplished drummer, will discuss <em>The Call to Dance<\/em> as a metaphor for social life, interaction and negotiation. &#8220;Mandinka drummers in The Gambia strategize and communicate through performances of musical-ritual phrases,&#8221; Thompson said.<\/p>\n<p>Drummed pieces will include regional and ethnic styles, linguistic musical connections, intra-ensemble communication and drummer-dancer interactions.<\/p>\n<p>As part of his visit to Bates, Thompson will offer a number of performances-demonstrations in community schools. His presentations will cover the social nature of Mandinka life, West African life in general and the social nature of music-making.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a schedule of Thompson&#8217;s school visits.
