Going strong since 1975, the Bates Puddle Jump is one of the great college traditions. Here are 10 reasons why:<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Tool time<\/strong>. Using a StrikeMaster gas-powered auger, pickaxes, and a two-man saw that might be a relic from Bates\u2019 forestry program, Outing Club members hack out a hole with vigor, if not precision.<\/p>\n

2. Perfect provenance<\/strong>. Long a St. Patrick\u2019s Day mainstay (invented in 1975 by Chris Callahan \u201978, Scott Copeland \u201978, and Lars Llorente \u201978), the Puddle Jump\u2019s busiest version is now during Winter Carnival.<\/p>\n

3. Risk-reward<\/strong>. \u201cEveryone who jumps takes a personal risk for the glory of tradition,\u201d says BOC president JeanMarie Gossard \u201910 of Andover, Mass.<\/p>\n

4. Fear factor<\/strong>. \u201cI\u2019m scared,\u201d said Becca Chacko \u201910 of Palo Alto, Calif. Yet she was steely-eyed as she clung to a friend before her \u201cfirst and last\u201d jump on the 30-degree afternoon. Post-dip, she reflected: \u201cWorse than I thought.\u201d<\/p>\n

5. Numbers game<\/strong>. Friends jump together. Largest group this year: six.<\/p>\n

6. Dignity begone<\/strong>. \u201cYou try not to fall going in, and try to come out gracefully,\u201d says Gossard.<\/p>\n

7. Naked guy<\/strong>. Remember to detour the Admissions tours next year.<\/p>\n

8. Sinking feeling<\/strong>. During the two-hour jump, the ice around the hole sinks and water floods from the hole, adding to the splish-splashiness.<\/p>\n

9. Thaw in relations<\/strong>. Costumes were a new twist this year, and Hieu Nguyen \u201913\u00a0 and Quan Mai \u201911\u00a0of Hanoi jumped in with Vietnamese flags as capes. The times they are a-changing.<\/p>\n

10. Mission accomplished<\/strong>. The Outing Club\u2019s goal at its 1920 founding was to \u201cmake the out of doors more entertaining.\u201d The scene on Jan. 22, 2010: Three hundred people at center ice on Lake Andrews, busting a gut. BOC vice president Kellen MacFadyen \u201912 of Anchorage, Alaska, surveyed the scene and concluded, \u201cThere are no cliques at the Puddle Jump.\u201d<\/p>\n
