But even if you didn\u2019t see Carlisle, you got a sense of why he\u2019s good at his job. As <em>Portfolio.com<\/em> reports,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.portfolio.com\/industry-news\/sports\/2010\/02\/17\/visa-congratulations-ads-resonate-with-athletes\/\"> Carlisle gets credit for the concept <\/a>behind those Morgan Freeman\u2013narrated Visa ads, specifically the ones congratulating medal-winning performers like Maine\u2019s Seth Wescott, a Carlisle client. In 2008, leading up to the Beijing games, Carlisle worried that the media might overlook Phelps\u2019 potential fourth gold medal, the one that would make him the all-time gold leader. So Carlisle pitched the congrats concept to Visa, which ran the ad right after Phelps won his fourth gold. The ad worked so well, says <em>Portfolio.com<\/em>, that Visa expanded the campaign for Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISINTERESTED <\/strong>A year after Elizabeth Eames\u2019 anthropology students researched the barriers to employment that face the local Somali community (<a href=\"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/views\/2009\/03\/01\/help-wanted-2\/\">\u201cHelp Wanted,\u201d Spring 2009<\/a>), students in another Eames course investigated a different impediment to immigrant success. At the request of Lewiston\u2019s Androscoggin Bank, the<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/islamic-banking\"> students looked into ways that local financial institutions <\/a>could serve the Somali community and other Muslims, who are forbidden by Islamic law to benefit from or pay interest.<br \/>\nIslamic banking in Lewiston.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CAPITAL IDEA<\/strong> Two years ago we profiled Gil Crawford \u201980, CEO of MicroVest, one of the first U.S. firms to make private investments in microfinance institutions (<a href=\"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/views\/2008\/05\/06\/its-a-microworld-after-all\/\">\u201cIt\u2019s a Microworld After All,\u201d Spring 2008)<\/a>. Since then? Well, as the global financial crisis unfolded and worsened in 2008 and 2009, institutional investors \u201cconducted rigorous quantitative due diligence\u201d on firms like MicroVest, explains Crawford. The good news? Investors, he says, \u201cdecided that even in the most bearish investment climate, we projected a risk-adjusted return meeting their institutional investment objectives.\u201d The proof\u2019s in the successful final closing of MicroVest II, a $60 million private equity fund that offers institutional investors exposure to \u201cbest-of-class\u201d MFIs around the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>VIDEO STAR<\/strong> Her videos may depict a woman struggling against tough physical obstacles (<a href=\"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/views\/2009\/07\/01\/break-on-through\/\">\u201cBreak on Through,\u201d Summer 2009<\/a>), but artist Kate Gilmore \u201997 isn\u2019t much hindered by the hurdles of art world acceptance.
