Reporter Edward Murphy writes that the legendary federal judge was &#8220;a serious, respected judge when he stepped into a courtroom, but a warm and funny mentor in his chambers.&#8221; Former law clerk David M. Cohen, now a retired U.S. magistrate judge, remembers a lawyer walking into Coffin&#8217;s chambers, unannounced, to rip one of Coffin&#8217;s recent opinions.
