Farnsworth also read a  poem of Tagliabue&#8217;s, called <a href=\"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/views\/2006\/09\/05\/tagliabue-poem\/\">&#8220;Sliding  into the Future.&#8221;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/x149922.xml\"><!--more--><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Canzone<\/h3>\n<p><em>In Memoriam John Tagliabue, On the Gift of His Scarf The Frost Place, Franconia N.H August 2006<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Amulet. Talisman. Banner of belief.<br \/>\nIt would seem to have arrived so far before<br \/>\nIts season, this long, harlequin neckerchief<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019d wear crossing campus in the iron cold,<br \/>\nYour dancer\u2019s step brisk behind January<br \/>\nDrifts &#8212; lively, discerning, meditative, bold<\/p>\n<p>In self-possession. You were yourself possessed &#8212;<br \/>\nWholly given to wild dapples of worlds and words.<\/p>\n<p>Now by grace of your Grace, this keepsake arrives<br \/>\nAt the old master\u2019s mountain house as summer\u2019s<br \/>\nFading, cooling. Your last brave word to the wise<\/p>\n<p>In our long dialogue, flag I should believe,<br \/>\nBright counterpoint to my ever skeptical<br \/>\nHeart, wistfully reposing here beside old leaves<\/p>\n<p>That evening\u2019s dark will purify to shadow,<br \/>\nBut which now a throbbing hummingbird still searches.<\/p>\n<p>Dear, diminished things.
