At the Sept. 11, 2006, faculty meeting,\u00a0English faculty member Rob Farnsworth, who spent the summer as the poet-in-residence at The Frost Place, a museum and arts center housed in poet Robert Frost’s former homestead in Franconia, N.H., offered this poem as part of the faculty’s Memorial Minute for\u00a0the late John Tagliabue. Farnsworth also read a poem of Tagliabue’s, called “Sliding into the Future.”<\/a><\/a><\/p>\n

Amulet. Talisman. Banner of belief.
\nIt would seem to have arrived so far before
\nIts season, this long, harlequin neckerchief<\/p>\n

You\u2019d wear crossing campus in the iron cold,
\nYour dancer\u2019s step brisk behind January
\nDrifts — lively, discerning, meditative, bold<\/p>\n

In self-possession. You were yourself possessed —
\nWholly given to wild dapples of worlds and words.<\/p>\n

Now by grace of your Grace, this keepsake arrives
\nAt the old master\u2019s mountain house as summer\u2019s
\nFading, cooling. Your last brave word to the wise<\/p>\n

In our long dialogue, flag I should believe,
\nBright counterpoint to my ever skeptical
\nHeart, wistfully reposing here beside old leaves<\/p>\n

That evening\u2019s dark will purify to shadow,
\nBut which now a throbbing hummingbird still searches.<\/p>\n

Dear, diminished things. Five days \u2018til departure,
\nUntil I return to our campus, as you\u2019d
\nCome back, inspired, from Florence or Djakarta,<\/p>\n

And pick back up the weaving of listeners with lines.
\nNow in time for last cold nights on the famous
\nPorch, for watching the waning silver moon climb<\/p>\n

Out of the granite crest of Lafayette, I have your scarf,
\nMemory of a master whom I knew, not one who just<\/p>\n

Wrote poems, but a Poet, in and of this hard, ravishing
