{"id":35762,"date":"2010-09-21T16:53:08","date_gmt":"2010-09-21T20:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/?p=35762"},"modified":"2017-11-03T14:31:30","modified_gmt":"2017-11-03T18:31:30","slug":"daily-series-michael-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2010\/09\/21\/daily-series-michael-12\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Series: Michael &#039;12 finds an oil-water mix at the Sierra Club"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>As summer  enters its final week, we are sharing stories from  students who had  Bates-related summer experiences, each day through  Sept. 21.<\/em><a href='https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2010\/09\/hands-across-the-sand-sf-michael.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2010\/09\/hands-across-the-sand-sf-michael-400x266.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium alignright\" alt=\"hands-across-the-sand-sf-michael\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Name<\/strong>: Leigh Michael &#8217;12<strong><br \/>\nMajor<\/strong>: Environmental Studies and English<strong><br \/>\nHometown<\/strong>: Andover, N.J.<strong><br \/>\nSummer activity<\/strong>: Interning with the Sierra Club in San Francisco under an<a href=\"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/views\/2010\/05\/13\/oak-foundation\/\"> Oak Foundation grant<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->By the time Leigh Michael &#8217;12 showed up for her internship at the <a href=\"http:\/\/sanfranciscobay.sierraclub.org\/chapter\/chapter_home.htm\">San Francisco Bay Chapter<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/\">Sierra Club<\/a> in June,\u00a0 the Deepwater Horizon oil spill had already poured a couple million barrels of oil in the Gulf.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the duties of her internship had great clarity. &#8220;I focused on the Gulf  oil spill,&#8221; she says, &#8220;and, consequently, the issue of water conservation because the San Francisco area constantly suffers from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=15276497\">water shortages.<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"pull_quote\">&#8220;A  sense of  tangibility.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She helped to stage protests,  including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.handsacrossthesand.com\/\">Hands Across the Sand<\/a> event on June 26, held informational meetings, dealt with local officials and  reached out to the public. She also <a href=\"http:\/\/baynature.org\/articles\/web-only-articles\/deciding-the-future-of-candlestick-point-recreation-area\">wrote articles <\/a> on conservation issues for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baynature.org\/\"><em>Bay Nature<\/em> <\/a>magazine.<\/p>\n<p><a href='https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2010\/09\/leigh-michael-60895_2.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2010\/09\/leigh-michael-60895_2-400x266.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium alignright\" alt=\"leigh-michael-60895_2\" \/><\/a>Just as the Gulf oil spill put a fine point on tough issues around U.S. energy and environmental policy, Michael says her Sierra Club internship &#8220;gave my Bates education a  sense of tangibility.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Sierra Club&#8217;s reaction to the oil spill, she adds, allowed her &#8220;to see how a  generously funded, world-renowned organization actually works.
