Writes Ray, &#8220;The tree stands  within 10 feet of existing Caltrain tracks between   the Menlo Park and  Palo Alto stations, with commuter trains passing by   90 times every  weekday.\u00a0Initial plans by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cahighspeedrail.ca.gov\/\">California High-Speed  Rail  Authority<\/a> called for widening the tracks to accommodate the new  rail  line, which  would \u00a0put the tree in jeopardy.&#8221; Like the erstwhile <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_Man_of_the_Mountain\">Old Man of the Mountain<\/a> in New Hamshire, El Palo Alto is a prominent and beloved Bay Area symbol featured on the <a href=\"http:\/\/identity.stanford.edu\/ug_seal_color.html#seal\">seal of Stanford University<\/a>, among other places. Ray, who majored in East Asian Studies and theater at Bates, is now studying in the Graduate Program in Journalism at Stanford.
