{"id":38230,"date":"2010-11-22T12:22:13","date_gmt":"2010-11-22T17:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/?p=38230"},"modified":"2016-06-28T13:51:53","modified_gmt":"2016-06-28T17:51:53","slug":"listening-looking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2010\/11\/22\/listening-looking\/","title":{"rendered":"Collaborative sound, image project based on local, Japanese children&#039;s contributions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href='https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2011\/03\/web_110606_orchestra_3813.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"590\" height=\"393\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2011\/03\/web_110606_orchestra_3813.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large alignright\" alt=\"Hiroya Miura\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Music improvised by schoolchildren from Japan and Lewiston forms the basis of a collaborative sound and image project to be performed at Bates College at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St.<\/p>\n<p><em>Listening In, Looking Out<\/em> is a project undertaken by Hiroya Miura, a composer who directs the<br \/>\nBates College Orchestra, in collaboration with Bates students, intermedia artist Peter Bussigel and percussionist Masaki Endo, as well as the children, whose recorded musical efforts form part of the soundscape.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Endo will perform during the presentation of the piece. For more information, please contact<br \/>\n207-786-6135 or this olinarts@bates.edu.<\/p>\n<p>The composition of the piece is based on a game, often associated with the Dadaist art movement of the early 20th century, in which each member of a team adds a piece, in turn, to the creation of a work. For <em>Listening In, Looking Out<\/em>, Miura, Bussigel and the Bates students conducted improvisation workshops this year with children in Sendai, Japan (where a version of the piece was premiered in 2009), and at Lewiston&#8217;s Farwell Elementary School.<\/p>\n<p>The workshops are designed to get children to improvise simple musical instruments from everyday objects.
