{"id":38450,"date":"2008-06-23T15:17:11","date_gmt":"2008-06-23T20:17:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/?p=38450"},"modified":"2015-03-27T13:05:40","modified_gmt":"2015-03-27T17:05:40","slug":"thompson-baseball-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2008\/06\/23\/thompson-baseball-coach\/","title":{"rendered":"Thompson named head baseball coach at Bates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href='https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/06\/72thompsonedwin_6313.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/06\/72thompsonedwin_6313-200x300.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium alignright\" alt=\"Edwin Thompson\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Edwin Thompson<\/strong>, a former Division I and professional baseball player from Maine, has been named head baseball coach at Bates College, Director of Athletics <strong>Kevin McHugh<\/strong> announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Jay, Maine, Thompson, age 28, most recently served as associate head baseball coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Maine\u2013Farmington. Thompson played baseball at Division I Howard University and the University of Maryland before playing his final two years of college baseball at Webber University, where he earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in business administration. Thompson also had a two-year professional playing career with the Bangor Lumberjacks, an independent minor league team.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had an outstanding group of finalists with a wealth of baseball playing and coaching experience among them. Edwin came across as the perfect fit for Bates and the baseball program,\u201d said McHugh. \u201cIn addition to the high baseball IQ he possesses, we are also excited about the leadership, energy and enthusiasm that Edwin will bring to the program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thompson succeeds <strong>Craig Vandersea<\/strong>, who resigned in June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thankful for the chance to coach at Bates and in my hometown area of Maine, and I\u2019m very excited about the trajectory of this program,\u201d said Thompson. \u201cWe\u2019ll be a team that you\u2019ll want to come out and see play. We\u2019re going to do all the little things to win baseball games, and we\u2019re going to play with passion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thompson was also head boys\u2019 varsity basketball coach at Jay High School in 2007-08, meanwhile running his own baseball summer camp in Jay.<\/p>\n<p>Bates returns numerous productive young players. Last year\u2019s freshman class included infielder <strong>Jake Simon<\/strong>, who started 25 games and batted .402 with a team-high 26 RBIs and shared the team lead in homers (3).
