Not so fast, says Associate Professor of Sociology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/fduina.xml\">Francesco Duina,<\/a> author of <a href=\"http:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/titles\/9340.html\"><em>Winning: Reflections on an American Obsession<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In interviews prompted by his book, Duina explains that Americans&#8217; zeal for victory, whether on the playing field or at the ballot box, leads us not to contentment but toward antagonism.<\/p>\n<p>Interviewed by the public radio show <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicbroadcasting.net\/wamc\/news.newsmain\/article\/7288\/0\/1726104\/Academic.Minute\/Dr..Francesco.Duina..Bates.College\"><em>The Academic Minute<\/em><\/a>, Duina notes that most surveys find that American&#8217;s are not a happy lot. &#8220;We are an anxious and worried people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A possible reason is linked to &#8220;our love of competition.&#8221; In much happier countries like Denmark, Duina notes that &#8220;children are taught lessons that to Americans sound almost offensive: that they are <em>not<\/em> to stand out and <em>not<\/em> to believe that they are good at anything.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet in America, social pressure to compete, win and shine above the rest &#8220;creates its own enormous tensions and problems.\u00a0We develop assumptions about the world, that we should approach others with an antagonistic mindset.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li>View stories in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/life\/audience\/a-winning-proposition_2010-11-07.html\">The Portland Press Herald<\/a>, Nov. 7, 2010, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunjournal.com\/city\/story\/922427\">Sun Journal<\/a>, Oct. 9, 2010, and listen to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicbroadcasting.net\/wamc\/news.newsmain\/article\/7288\/0\/1726104\/Academic.Minute\/Dr..Francesco.Duina..Bates.College\">The Academic Minute<\/a>, Nov. 25, 2010.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href='https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2010\/12\/duina-winning-cover-9340.gif'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2010\/12\/duina-winning-cover-9340-197x300.gif\" class=\"attachment-medium alignright\" alt=\"duina-winning-cover-9340\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Duina, who chairs the Bates sociology department, tells <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunjournal.com\/city\/story\/922427\">Lewiston <em>Sun Journal<\/em> <\/a>reporter Dan Hartill that his goal with <em>Winning<\/em>, his fourth book, &#8220;was to figure out what the language of competition is all  about.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Interviewed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/life\/audience\/a-winning-proposition_2010-11-07.html\">The Portland Press Herald<\/a>, Duina says another result of a winner <em>uber alles<\/em> mindset is that the victor believes that &#8220;I win, therefore I&#8217;m right.&#8221; Yet it is flawed logic, he says, to &#8220;believe if we win at something then our world view in general is right. &#8216;I&#8217;m right, in general, if I win at basketball. I win the election to become governor, then I must have the right  mindset.&#8217;&#8230; But it&#8217;s not that clear.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Winning makes us happy?
