According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mpbn.net\/Home\/tabid\/36\/ctl\/ViewItem\/mid\/3478\/ItemId\/14973\/Default.aspx\">MPBN   report<\/a>, &#8220;Republicans&#8230;think [there] is significant fraud and  abuse  in a system they believe encourages some Mainers to rely on  public  assistance instead of going out and finding a job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Maine Legislature will <a href=\"\/\/www.onlinesentinel.com\/news\/welfare-a-hottopic-in-augusta_2011-01-23.html\">consider various bills addressing welfare and  programs like TANF<\/a>, including proposals to  impose time limits on  eligibility, tougher residency requirements and  drug testing for  recipients.<\/p>\n<p>Standiford, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mainewomen.org\/standiford.html\">executive director of the Maine Women&#8217;s Lobby<\/a>, the report&#8217;s co-sponsor, told media at a Jan. 26 Statehouse news conference that the study brings &#8220;real information and credible analysis to the debate about TANF.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While the program has been called out &#8220;by legislators in this building and in the news and opinion pages,&#8221; said Standiford,\u00a0who in recent weeks has also publicly encouraged Gov. LePage to ensure <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/opinion\/gov_-lepage-has-an-opportunity-to-support-diversity-in-his-appointments_2011-01-12.html\">gender  diversity in his cabinet selections, <\/a>&#8220;much of today&#8217;s debate has been driven by&#8230;anecdotes and stereotypes &#8212; not credible information.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/opinion\/aid-for-needy-families-supports-those-who-work-and-have-kids_2011-01-27.html\">Writing in the <em>Press Herald<\/em><\/a>, the study&#8217;s authors, Thomas Chalmers McLaughlin of the<strong> <\/strong>University of New England and Sandy Butler of the University of Maine-Orono, say that &#8220;our research shows that this program is focused on young children, single moms and families dealing with disability.
