Bates in the News<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><a name=\"1\"><\/a>1. <a href=\"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/views\/2011\/07\/01\/tuition-response\/\">Apples-to-oranges comparison skews college-cost list <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An apples-to-oranges comparison of college costs released June 30 by the U.S. Department of Education gives a misleading impression of the true cost of attending Bates.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><a name=\"2\">2. <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/views\/2011\/07\/28\/august-2011-images-of-bates\/\">Slide show: August kicks off with a sound check on Garcelon<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The August slide show kicks off with a photograph of two Bates Summer Scholars from Maine making sound  measurements on Garcelon Field, part of a course on musical acoustics taught by Professor of Physics John Smedley. Summer Scholars are selected from promising first-year students from groups traditionally underrepresented in math and science.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><a name=\"3\">3.<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/presidentialsearch\/\"> Presidential Search website offers overview, opportunity<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The comprehensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/presidentialsearch\/\">Presidential Search website<\/a> features a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/presidentialsearch\/prospectus\/\">Presidential Prospectus<\/a> that gives a compelling overview of the college today and offers the opportunity to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/presidentialsearch\/nominate\/\">nominate or send ideas<\/a> about the next Bates president.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><a name=\"4\"><\/a>4. <a href=\"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/views\/2011\/07\/07\/clean-sweep-folo11\/\">Clean Sweep raises $16,540 for 13 area nonprofits<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Clean Sweep, Bates&#8217; green &#8220;garage sale&#8221; of appliances, furniture, electronics and other goods donated by departing students, raised $16,540 for 13 local nonprofit organizations. A popular community tradition, the sale drew 800 bargain-hunters to Underhill for a win-win-win event for shoppers, the environment and local nonprofits.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><a name=\"5\"><\/a>5. <a href=\"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/views\/2011\/07\/21\/sun-journal-sleeper-08\/\">Video: Lewiston youth summer program founded by Julia Sleeper &#8217;08<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lewiston <em>Sun Journal<\/em> reporter Bonnie Washuk visits Tree Street Youth, a high-energy downtown summer camp program for underserved youngsters founded by Julia Sleeper &#8217;08, who has worked with Lewiston youth since graduation. She planned the camp after a major Maine foundation stopped its summer-camp voucher program for Lewiston children.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><a name=\"6\"><\/a>6. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/x227452.xml\">Margo Linton is the new varsity women&#8217;s volleyball head coach<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bates has appointed former Bowdoin standout, Connecticut College assistant and Andrew College head coach Margo Linton as the 11th head coach in the 45-year history of Bates varsity women&#8217;s volleyball.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><a name=\"7\"><\/a>7. <a href=\"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/views\/2011\/05\/11\/bcma-drawing-wyeths\/\">Museum exhibits of Wyeth, Maine artists, explore &#8216;unlimited possibility of drawing&#8217;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/life\/audience\/wyeths-women-at-bates-illustrate-power-of-drawing_2011-07-24.html\"><em>Maine Sunday Telegram <\/em>reviewer Dan Kany<\/a> explains the power of two drawing-focused Bates College Museum of Art exhibitions by noting that &#8220;drawing is an informational tool of virtually unlimited possibility. We use drawings to solve problems and convey ideas to others, not just data but love and humor as well.&#8221; The <a href=\"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/views\/2011\/05\/11\/bcma-drawing-wyeths\/\">two museum shows<\/a> are <em>Emerging Dis\/Order<\/em>, featuring drawings by Amy Stacey Curtis, Alison Hildreth and Andrea Sulzer, and <em>Andrew and Jamie Wyeth<\/em>, offering selections from the private collection of Victoria Browning Wyeth &#8217;01. The shows continue through Oct. 2.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><a name=\"8\"><\/a>8. Bates fall weekends offer reunions, anniversaries, exhibits and sports<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bates&#8217; two major fall weekends &#8212;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/Homecoming.xml\"> Homecoming <\/a>is Sept. 23-24, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/parents-weekend.xml\">Parents &amp; Family Weekend<\/a> Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 &#8212; are a great time to visit campus: great weather, exhibitions and discussions, athletic events, and affinity gatherings and reunions galore.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><strong><a name=\"9\"><\/a><\/strong>9. <a href=\"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/views\/2011\/07\/26\/ccu-11july26\/\">Campus Construction Update: a Roger Bill tour<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong> <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Visitors saw big, bright windows; sage green and rich medium blue walls glowing in the natural light; and generous and varied spaces for offices, lounges, meetings and classrooms for faculty and students. Renovated and expanded for the college&#8217;s language programs and Off-Campus Study program, Roger Williams&#8217; aesthetic and functional improvements are a delight.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><strong><strong><a name=\"10\"><\/a><\/strong><\/strong>10. <a href=\"http:\/\/home.bates.edu\/views\/in-the-news\/\">Bates in the News <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>CNNMoney<\/em> profiles the innovative group-buying website NumbersPay, launched in May by four Bates students.
